CHAPTER NINE

JAKE LEANED back on an elbow and said amiably, “Our first mutual decision should be what to do about the bed.”

Britt’s smile was bland. “I rented the room. I get the bed. I’ve got a sleeping bag in the truck. You can use it.”

“The truck’s locked in the garage,” he pointed out.

“Then you can sleep in the tub after I’ve had my bath.”

“Okay,” he said amiably. “You can walk behind the car when I drive home tomorrow.”

She slanted him a wary look. “We can’t share the bed.”

“Why not? Aren’t you to be trusted?” He sat up and leaned toward her, his grin broadening. “Does the widow Hansen harbor a lustful desire for Dudley Doright?”

She struggled valiantly to keep the truth from her eyes. She succeeded by narrowing them. “This is a small double bed,” she said. “There is such a thing as stupidity prevention.”

He shook his head. “I wish I’d been aware of that before I tried to find a private-plane pilot after hours, an all-night fast-food place in the boonies and a car to rent.”

She laughed despite herself, realizing for the first time that it truly was amazing he was there. She folded her arms and asked, “And you think the widow Hansen’s body should be your reward?”

He shook his head innocently. “No. Just the widow Hansen’s bed.” He smiled slowly, dangerously. “I’m a patient man. I can wait for your body.”

She met his innocence with wide-eyed interest. “You’re planning to live to be very old?”

He shook his head at her refusal to accept the inevitable. “It won’t take that long,” he said softly. “If you want your back scrubbed, just call.”

She sighed, conceding defeat. She couldn’t in all fairness consign him to the floor for the night when he’d gone to a great deal of trouble and expense to come to her rescue. “You’ll stay on your side of the bed?”

“I promise to try,” he said, getting to his feet. “But I’m a restless sleeper. I’ve got a bag in the car. Be right back.”

He was in bed when she came out of the bathroom. His eyes were closed and he was as close to his side of the bed as it was possible to be. His nicely sculpted chest was bare, except for a light pelt of hair over his pectoral muscles.

She looked at the bed with trepidation, wondering if the bottom half of him was clothed. Then she bravely decided it didn’t matter and got under the blankets without lifting them too far. He’d promised to stay on his side. She reached up to the lamp on the bedside table and turned it off.

As she leaned back into her pillow, she was grabbed in a pair of strong arms and gathered to the middle of the bed, where she was kissed senseless. The day’s miseries vanished along with her concerns for tomorrow. Her mind seemed to short out as her body overloaded on sensation.

Jake’s mouth opened and closed on hers, his hand swept gently, exploratively down the side of her cotton nightshirt.
