CHAPTER NINE
JAKE LEANED back on an elbow and said amiably, âOur first mutual decision should be what to do about the bed.â
Brittâs smile was bland. âI rented the room. I get the bed. Iâve got a sleeping bag in the truck. You can use it.â
âThe truckâs locked in the garage,â he pointed out.
âThen you can sleep in the tub after Iâve had my bath.â
âOkay,â he said amiably. âYou can walk behind the car when I drive home tomorrow.â
She slanted him a wary look. âWe canât share the bed.â
âWhy not? Arenât you to be trusted?â He sat up and leaned toward her, his grin broadening. âDoes the widow Hansen harbor a lustful desire for Dudley Doright?â
She struggled valiantly to keep the truth from her eyes. She succeeded by narrowing them. âThis is a small double bed,â she said. âThere is such a thing as stupidity prevention.â
He shook his head. âI wish Iâd been aware of that before I tried to find a private-plane pilot after hours, an all-night fast-food place in the boonies and a car to rent.â
She laughed despite herself, realizing for the first time that it truly was amazing he was there. She folded her arms and asked, âAnd you think the widow Hansenâs body should be your reward?â
He shook his head innocently. âNo. Just the widow Hansenâs bed.â He smiled slowly, dangerously. âIâm a patient man. I can wait for your body.â
She met his innocence with wide-eyed interest. âYouâre planning to live to be very old?â
He shook his head at her refusal to accept the inevitable. âIt wonât take that long,â he said softly. âIf you want your back scrubbed, just call.â
She sighed, conceding defeat. She couldnât in all fairness consign him to the floor for the night when heâd gone to a great deal of trouble and expense to come to her rescue. âYouâll stay on your side of the bed?â
âI promise to try,â he said, getting to his feet. âBut Iâm a restless sleeper. Iâve got a bag in the car. Be right back.â
He was in bed when she came out of the bathroom. His eyes were closed and he was as close to his side of the bed as it was possible to be. His nicely sculpted chest was bare, except for a light pelt of hair over his pectoral muscles.
She looked at the bed with trepidation, wondering if the bottom half of him was clothed. Then she bravely decided it didnât matter and got under the blankets without lifting them too far. Heâd promised to stay on his side. She reached up to the lamp on the bedside table and turned it off.
As she leaned back into her pillow, she was grabbed in a pair of strong arms and gathered to the middle of the bed, where she was kissed senseless. The dayâs miseries vanished along with her concerns for tomorrow. Her mind seemed to short out as her body overloaded on sensation.
Jakeâs mouth opened and closed on hers, his hand swept gently, exploratively down the side of her cotton nightshirt.
