Jacinta
She smiled, brushed a smudge of dirt from his face and doubted either of them would win any beauty pageants at the moment. But the emotion beneath his words was a thing of immense beauty, a caress whispered against her skin, and she smiled as she closed her eyes so she could forget where she was and just be, in this moment, in his arms.
Sheâd accepted the strange ache sheâd had since Jonah Armstrong had been wheeled into her world and the futility of fighting against her destiny to love him.
Aware now why sheâd followed him to this country, risking everything, and if in the end sheâd gambled more than sheâd planned to, it was because of this moment, and any moments they had left.
Was he her soul mate?
Was he the empty part of her heart that sheâd thought would never be filled?
Here in this grubby, earthen-floored tent on a steamy, menacing night in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, she knew sheâd found love. Not the floating, romantic, giggly type of love but the I-need-him-to-breathe type of love that promised heartache and agony if they were given enough time.
Off balance and confused by the magnitude of her discovery, Jacinta hugged the questions to herself for a little longer, but she couldnât help squeezing his hand and praying that at least some of her feelings were returned.
She regretted the pain she would cause to Noni and her father at her choice to come to this country, but she could not regret her discovery.
She lifted her face to Jonahâs and this time she took the initiative. The restraint of his lips softened as she pressed more firmly against him. He waited, almost passive under her mouth as if testing her resolve, until the first tentative touch from her tongue kindled his passion.
Then he shifted his weight and took control, and she was seared by his need as he crushed her to him. This time it was different, this time she found a need in him that she hadnât realised she had the power to ignite.
There was awe in that realisation that made her want to push him further, but he loosened his hold and gentled his mouth before he put her away from him.
âI wish, my love, but this is not the place. Try to sleep,â he said softly. âI want you. Donât ever doubt that. Iâve wanted you from the first moment 1 saw you. I just hope that when we are safely back at Pudjip you donât regret me telling you this.â
He eased over to lean above her, planted his hands on either side of her head and seared her with a look. âYou are the most amazing woman I have ever met.â He kissed her and then edged back reluctantly to sit upright against the pole. âSleep. Iâll keep watch in case thereâs a chance to get away.â
Jacinta sighed with frustration as she lay back and pulled her forearm over her face. Sheâd just received her first refusal, but the way heâd refused had made her smile through her embarrassment.
