Twenty-Three

STELLAN

The room was still and silent but for the sound of Ellie’s steady breathing. Outside the doors, I heard the daily shuffle of life going on. The Rebellion and the women who took shelter here were going about their business. The most powerful mage to ever walk this world slept in a bed only a few feet away from them all. I ran my fingers through the silky strands of her wild hair. It’d all come loose from the bun she’d wound it in. Those midnight locks spread over her pillow in thick dark waves. Her eyelashes fanned out over her creamy cheeks as she drew in deep soft breaths.

Just sitting in the bed next to her, letting my fingers drift through the ends of her hair, was so soothing to me. Like all the pressure I felt to save this world somehow wasn’t so all-consuming when I had her with me like this. I leaned back against the headboard and let my head rest on it. Ellie flopped onto her side and draped her arm over my hips, tucking her face into my side. She was like a kitten, stretching and seeking comfort in her sleep. I froze, not wanting to stir her.

My soulmate was wrapped around me and I could hardly believe it. For years I thought she was dead, so to have her laying here with her ocean scent surrounding me…it was a dream. And with it came a kind of peace I had never experienced.

The door creaked open and I sat there unsure of what to do. Melanie peeked around the door and raised her eyebrows at me. She crooked her finger, signaling for me to leave Ellie to follow her. But I didn’t want to leave this moment. I shook my head. She pressed her lips in a thin line and narrowed her eyes at me. She pointed at me then out toward the door with jerky, insistent motions. Like I didn’t have a choice in the matter. I sighed and rolled my eyes, then mouthed the word fine. As gently as I could manage, I lifted Ellie’s arm from my waist and slid out of the side of the bed. The warmth of her little body left me all too soon.

“Stellan?” Her words were slow and sleepy. Was she dreaming or just waking up?

“Shh, rest.” I whispered, then ran my fingers over her cheek and smoothed the hair back from her face. Soon she was snuggled into her pillows and fell into steady even breaths.

Once she was comfortable, I walked out into the hallways to face Melanie. “Yes?”

“What are you doing?” She hissed under her breath. “I don’t recall cuddling as part of the plan.”

“I’m improvising.” I glared at her. Yes, Melanie was helping me more than I could even say. But when it came to my soulmate there were some instincts that couldn’t be denied. Holding her while she slept seemed to fall into that category. Especially when she asked me to.

Melanie crooked her finger at me.
