She called the Sheriff’s office the next morning. She didn’t remember seeing anything like “gay vengeance killing” on Sheriff Cade’s board, but she figured she should at least warn him what people were thinking.

“This town sucks you in, doesn’t it?” Sheriff Cade said. “It took a good week before that one got to us. That suggestion must’ve been one of the last of the halfway-made-sense theories because the part about Jacob Webber killing himself is true. Since then, it’s been mostly the ridiculous theories.”

“I’m sorry for wasting your time.”

“No. In fact, it’d do you good to talk to Nick. Give you a better sense of how this case is undoing my town. At least when you showed up, everybody started theorizing it was zombies. Now they’re back to accusing neighbors of doing the things they fear the most. Those accusations are a maelstrom. Enough times goes by, you almost want to believe their stories just to make it all stop. I wasn’t being callous when I spoke to Autumn Hartley and y’all yesterday. Dropping this case is in the best interest of the town. I thought maybe the worst was over when we-you-recovered Sam’s remains. But now I think the hardest part is still ahead of us. The worst thing that could’ve happened to this community was finding that little gun in the brush last night.”

“Well then, what about flanking for me tonight? It’d be good for this community for you to help with this search.”

“Still can’t do it. But good luck. And be careful, Angie. I have three new theories on the board today, and they’re all about you.”

He hung up before she could ask about the theories.

Angie was frustrated. She was tempted to walk away from the search. Find the first ride to Lubbock and board a plane back to Houston. Instead, she took Murder to the bathroom outside, found Webber’s address, and started walking.
