Chapter 14

Wesley

Day 6

“You need help in there? I can hear them yelling from out here—and so can everyone else.”

“We’ve got it, Derek. They’re just excited, I think. Question… if we unhook the trailer, could this truck pull a couple of those others out in the lot into that big warehouse bay?”

Frowning, Derek followed Wesley’s gesture. “Yeah, but they could probably put ‘em in neutral and push ‘em faster, though. There’s a bit of a slope here, which should make it easier, and they’ve got enough people to do it. I’d rather not unhook anything if I don’t have to.”

“That makes sense. I’ll go back in and talk to them.”

“Try to speed things up, kiddo. The same group of people have passed by three times trying to check out the truck. I doubt my friendly face is going to keep them away for much longer.”

After a furtive look around, Wesley hurried back inside. The group was still talking excitedly, hope on their faces and in their voices. Even Lynn’s demeanor had relaxed a little. He headed for Morgan and told him what he’d discussed with Derek. As soon as he was done, Morgan raised his hands. “Listen up!” Everyone slowly quieted. “It’s getting too dangerous to leave our truck out there for much longer. We’ll help you get a couple of your trucks in here if you’ll help load some of these panels in exchange. We can bring your vehicles in through the big bay doors, and you can get to work on them. We’ll stop back by tomorrow with more food. There’s an automotive repair shop on the corner of Linden and Miller that may have any parts you don’t have on hand here. I don’t know if the place is accessible, but it’s within easy walking distance.”

“We appreciate that, Morgan,” Al said. “Come on, people. Let’s get those trucks in here. Anyone armed, be prepared to stand on lookout.”

Jerry, who stood apart from the rest, scanned the racks around him speculatively. “What about my Volt? We should have parts around here for that, I’d think.”

A woman, Johanna, Wesley recalled, raised a brow. “You obviously don’t understand what an EMP is or what it does, do you?”

The man flushed. “If you can fix a diesel truck, why can’t my car be fixed, too?”

“Because an EMP affects the electrical components, Jerry. What do you think your Volt is made up of besides computer chips and electrical components? Everything except the battery itself is likely fried.”

Al turned away from the bay door several men were trying to muscle open. “I forgot you drove one of those. It would be a lot of work, but we might be able to use its battery for backup power.”

“What? No! Absolutely not!” Wesley coughed to try to cover his laugh at the man’s indignation and received a glare in response. “Don’t you dare touch my car!”

Johanna rolled her eyes. “It’s never going to run again, Jer. We might as well get some use out of it if we can.
