After breaking the happy news to family and friends, most brides consulted with a pastor or spiritual advisor of some kind, Gigi reached out to her publicist, Stella Horn. “I’m getting married!”

“Gigi, sweetie! Congratulations!” Stella cried. “Who’s the lucky man?”

“Myles Paris.”

“There’s nothing out there linking you to anyone by that name,” Stella noted. “Who is he? Have you known him long?”

Gigi could just imagine Stella feverishly taking notes, already twisting the information she fed her into a narrative that would please the public and satisfy the press. “He’s a chef and Alessandro’s best friend.”

“Good...good...”

The din of conversation, laughter and the light clashing of utensils filtered through. Gigi checked the time. It was noon in LA. “Are you at lunch? Am I interrupting?”

“Interrupting? Don’t be ridiculous!” Stella shot back. “I’m at a business lunch, but what bigger business than your wedding? If we play our cards right, we can get a feature in Vogue.”

Stella had missed the point. “I’d rather not talk with loads of people around. I’m counting on your discretion.”

“Heading to the restrooms as we speak,” Stella said. “Just give me a second to lock the door... Okay. Where were we? Right! Your fabulous wedding.”

“Correct.”

“Where will this momentous event take place?”

“Miami.”

“Oh, good. Florida is a no-fault state. Do you have a date in mind?”

“Not yet.”

“A general time frame?” Stella probed.

“Soon.”

“How soon is soon?”

“Very soon.”

She and Myles had not set a date, but the sooner the better. Her lawyers were working on creating the LLC. They had to act fast before some other bloodthirsty developer moved in on Diablo. Honestly, she wasn’t going to let anything, anyone, any dollar amount, stop her from acquiring that restaurant for Myles. It would make the perfect wedding gift.

Stella’s response snapped her back to reality. She said only, “Hmm...”

“Hmm...what?”

“Your father hasn’t been gone very long. A fabulous wedding featured in Vogue might not be the way to go.”

It would be in poor taste. “I know. That was never the plan.”

Stella, who knew her well, certainly picked up on her disappointment. She would have loved a big celebration, to party until dawn with all her friends. More so, she would’ve wanted her father to be there, for him to walk her down the aisle, dance with her to the song they’d danced to at her quinceañera, and for him to bore the guests with one of his long-winded speeches. As much as she resented him now, she still loved him.

“If you put it off six months or so, you could have the wedding of your dreams,” Stella said gently. “The world would celebrate you. Right now, they’ll wonder why you’re dancing on your father’s grave. Not the look we’re going for.”

“I can’t put it off,” Gigi said. “It has to be now.”

“Why?” Stella asked. “Is there something else I need to know?”

“I’m not pregnant. Don’t go there.”

“Not even a little pregnant?”

“Not even,” she assured her. “Not that that’s a thing.”

“Something is going on,” Stella said. “Whatever it is, please know you can tell me.
