Chapter 32

We got to Alabama without any problems around 9:00 p.m. the next night. Kevin met us at a T&A truck stop, right off of I-10 in Grand Bay. We followed him to my mom and step-dad’s place, where we were going to stay. They had a room set up for us when we got there. We sat around talking for a little while, then went to sleep.

The next day, there were a lot of visitors. I had been gone for several years, and with the exception of one nephew; Timothy, and two nieces; Sonja and Jessica, I hadn’t met any one of my sister’s kids, or Kevin’s kids. By now, my sister had a grand total of 5 kids and Kevin had 4. That was a lot of kids for me to have to meet and convince that I was the world’s greatest uncle.

It only took about a week or so for Kevin to get me a job at the place he was working at, making fiberglass pipes. I had to get hired through a temporary agency in the beginning, and after a short probationary period, I would be hired full time. When I went in for my interview at the temp agency, I had to take a drug test. I hadn’t done anything since leaving Tennessee, and I had been drinking a shit-load of water, so I passed it, but I was nervous about it.

During the first few days we were in Alabama, Lisa was being an anti-social bitch. She just wanted to lay in bed and she would ignore anyone who tried talking to her. I made all the excuses I could for her at first, but she was really embarrassing me. Finally, she told me she just wanted to go back to Tenn. I told her that just wasn’t possible at the moment, because I just started my new job. I promised her I would take her back when I went to see my probation officer in a few weeks, and this seemed to make her happy. For a couple of days, she seemed to perk up a little. At least now she was eating, and would talk some.

The second week we were in Alabama we got a call that Lisa’s dad was sick and had been admitted to the hospital. Now we had to go back to Tennessee. I drove to work to explain the situation to my supervisor, and he told me to, “Go take care of family.” He said to call him in a few days, to let him know how things were going. When I got back to my mom’s, Lisa had all of her shit packed and ready to go. I knew she wasn’t planning on coming back. After the way she had been acting, I really didn’t care.

We had smoked just about all of the dope we had brought down with us, so we barely had enough to smoke one foil between us before we left. Another problem was that we didn’t have any cash at all.
