Chapter 6

I found an apartment I liked a lot. It was a brand new complex. The developer was staying at the hotel where I had been working and he gave me the heads up. It was nice and cozy. I choose a unit in the back of the complex that was nestled in a nice little corner. It seemed safe and out of the way of mainstream traffic. It was spacious and I was happy with it. Although the deal had been for my brother to move in, he didn’t exactly live there. He was there a lot and sometimes he’d spend the night, but he still didn’t truly live there. My new place was about a 20 minute walk from where he lived. I knew if I called he could be there fast. The apartment smelled like a new building when I moved in. The walls were stark white and the counter tops still had little specs of dust on them from construction. There was a small tiled entry way that led into the living area. To the right was a huge bay style window. I wasn’t too fond of that, but it would do. It felt like people could look in at me and I don’t like that kind of layout to this day. The window was almost the length of the wall and I’d decided to put a dining set there and cover the window with dark window dressings. If you stood at the front door and turned your head left you’d be looking into the guest bedroom. Just past the entryway and on the left side of the apartment was the kitchen. It was standard. Super white with a basic refrigerator, stove and small dishwasher. The cabinets were a stone grayish color with tiny little flecks of pink scattered in. It was an odd combination and it made the kitchen feel cold when you took in the cabinets against the blinding white walls. Everything was brand new which helped. I couldn’t imagine spots or dirt or just the stains that come with everyday wear and tear on that white, gray and pink canvas.

Wrapped around to the left side of the kitchen was the guest bedroom. If you walked through the kitchen into that bedroom you would eventually end up back at the front entryway. It just looked like 4 walls. And that’s all it was. No windows, no fancy architecture, just a room. The carpet in the bedroom was a little more plush than the run of the mill thin layer that covered the living area. Straight ahead from the entry way was the master bedroom. The room was pretty big. It had a nice layout. There was a small window to the right of the door and to the left was a small closet which sat just at the entrance to the bathroom. To the right of the entrance to the bathroom was a medium sized walk in closet. There were flakes of white dust
