Saffy

When Saffy steps through the front door with her groceries, she feels exhausted. After a few fruitless minutes of searching for Leona’s neighbour outside the shop, she braved the stares and under-the-breath muttering and brazenly went back into the store. Saffy apologized for the broken jam jars and picked up her basket from the place she’d abandoned it, paying for her goods.

Now, she’s wiped out. When she closes the front door she sees the postman has been and nearly steps on the letters scattered on the hardwood floor. Saffy gathers up the three envelopes and takes them into the kitchen.

One is a utility bill, another concerns a near-neighbour’s planning application for a conservatory at the back of their house. On the third one, Saffy’s name and address have been handwritten.

She tears it open and takes out a single sheet of folded paper. Carefully, she unfolds it and flattens it out on the counter. She reads the short message once, twice, and the third time, she grips the worktop and sits on a breakfast stool, staring down at it in disbelief.

We don’t want people like you around here … Everyone knows what you’ve done.
