CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âWELL, I LIKE your woman,â Hunter said.
Wolfâs hackles rose. âDo you consider it your solemn duty to hit on every woman Sawyer and I bring home?â
âI didnât hit on Evelyn,â Hunter said.
âYou did,â Sawyer said.
He lifted his beer to his lips and shot Hunter a sidelong glare.
They had finished up a particularly rough workday early, and were sitting on Hunterâs porch at his cabin over at McCloudâs Landing, marinating in the hurt theyâd put on their bodies. The echo of labor ran down straight to his bones.
Hunterâs cabin was right on the river, easy access to fishing, which they often enjoyed. Elsie had gone over to the Sullivansâ after work, because she and Alaina had plans for an endurance ride, and they were getting all of their gear together and making plans for what route they would take.
Elsie had been working with Hunter today, getting familiarized with the ranch. It was strange; no one from the families had ever crossed over to working at one of the different branches. But Elsie was invested in horses. And while it might ultimately end up that she brought more of an equine spin to Garrettâs Watch, it was going to be linked to the McClouds. So she was starting with work there.
âItâs just because Evelyn is a particularly beautiful woman,â Hunter said. âAnd you were very uncertain with what you were going to do about all this at first. If you recall. The angriest Iâve ever seen a man be about being attracted to a lady.â
âBecause it wasnât that simple,â Sawyer said.
âSure,â Hunter said. âWhat about you?â He directed the question at Wolf. âYou mad about Violet being pretty?â
âSheâs too young for you,â Wolf said.
Hunter snorted. âSheâs too young for you.â
âIâm two years younger than you,â he pointed out to Hunter. âAnd anyway, no, Iâm not mad about it. Iâm just waiting her out. Waiting the situation out. I know what Iâm going to do. Iâm going to do the right thing.â
They lapsed into silence, nothing but the sound of the rushing river, the creaking wooden chairs and the clink of beer bottles. âWhat is the right thing?â Hunter asked after a while.
Sawyer laughed. âI think in our case itâs basically the opposite of whatever happened in our family. Because that seems about right. Probably the best you could do.â
âDamn straight,â Wolf said, taking a swig of beer. âI think if we donât look anything like our parents, weâre probably doing okay.â
âYou okay?â Sawyer asked, directing the question to Wolf.
âWhat do you mean am I okay?â
âLook. Hunter and I never wanted this. Never wanted the marriage and kids thing. You did, though.â
Wolf gritted his teeth. âIâm not thinking about that. Got nothing to do with anything.â
âIt does, though. Because as far as I can tell she has a lot to do with how you live your life every single day. So how can this be separate from it?â
âBecause it is. I have to do right by Violet. No. I wouldnât have chosen this.
