Chapter 14

Philomena Haven brushed her mahogany locks from her neck and adjusted her computer screen to avoid the morning glare. It was a beautiful day and she wished she could be out riding but there was work to be done.

A gentle tap on the frame of her office door had her spinning on her stool with a welcoming smile.

“Ms. Haven.” A slim woman with a stunning olive complexion and raven hair stood framed in the door, looking sheepish. “I’m Delmarie Rivera, I’m here to sign some papers.”

“Oh good morning.” Phil said, a range of emotions flicking through her violet eyes as she studied the young woman, “come in I have the papers ready. Chase explained everything last night.”

Del half smiled at her hostess, more at what remained unsaid than at the words spoken. “I also have some letters for you.” She said stepping into the office only to be stopped by the cat leaping in front of her and winding himself around her ankles.

“I see you’ve met Fred.” Phil said holding up a thick sheaf of pages. “He seems to like you.”

“We’ve spent some time together eying that quilt in the hall.” Del admitted, “though I expect our motives were very different at the time.”

“Have a seat here,” Phil indicated a stool next to a desk that stretched in front of the windows as she bent and picked up the cat, “I’m afraid there are a good deal of signatures needed.”

“I suspected there would be. You are running a business and I’m sure insurance has strict regulations on what guests can and can’t do.”

“If we’d known you’d want a camp excursion on arrival it might have been simpler.” There was no sensor in Phil’s voice but Del felt it all the same and ducked her head studying the pages and signing or initialing each line that had been highlighted in pale purple.

“I’m sorry for the inconvenience.” She finally said, finishing with a flourish and handing the packet to Phil.

“One thing I’ve come to understand is that life does not happen as expected.” Phil offered an understanding smile. “When I got the letter from the lawyer saying I had inherited a ranch over a year ago, I never would have dreamed what my life would end up like now.”

Del smiled, pleased that Phil understood, and knowing that Colby’s job was safe at least until he did some other crazy thing.

“I have these letters for you by the way.” She finally spoke, pulling the strap of the beaded bag over her head. “We found them when Colby was working at the cabin and I’m afraid I couldn’t help but read them.”

Phil’s eyes sparked with interest as Del handed her the dark leather bag. “What are they?” she asked, opening the flap and pulling the yellowed envelopes out carefully.

“They seem to be from the original inhabitants of the cabin. I had to read at least all of the ones from the young woman Annabelle to her mother Wynona.”

Phil laughed, surprising Del. “When I
