Hair Health

There are many reasons that men may lose hair. The most common reasons of which I am aware for hair loss in men are stress, lowered metabolic rate, poor thyroid health, infection, and so-called androgenic alopecia (or male pattern baldness).

At present, I happen to have a thick head of hair. Several years ago I was very, very sick. I was stressed and my metabolic rate was extremely low. At that point, I started losing hair in clumps. Since then, I have discovered effective ways to let go of stress, I have vastly improved my metabolic rate, and my hair has become thick and healthy once again.

If you are losing hair and you are stressed and/or you have a low metabolic rate, then I encourage you to look to the Stress and Metabolism sections of the book for some insights on how you may go about improving those conditions. You will likely find that this is the best first step in addressing this type of hair loss.

Likewise, if you are losing hair and you have a known thyroid disorder, then I suggest that addressing thyroid health is likely the best approach to the hair loss.

If you are losing hair and you have a known infection, then addressing the infection is a logical first step.

Inflammation is also implicated in hair loss, including androgenic alopecia. Specifically, the over-expression of the cytokine known as IL-1beta may be involved, so herbs that reduce IL-1beta may be helpful in slowing or reversing hair loss. Herbs that inhibit IL-1beta include ashwagandha, turmeric, nettle leaf, schizandra, guggul, and reishi.

If you believe that you are losing hair due to androgenic alopecia, then I will offer you some insights that may be of value to you. I must preface this by saying that, to the best of my knowledge, I have never personally experienced androgenic alopecia, so what I share with you in this regard is anecdotal for the most part.

Before I share with you possible ways to address so-called pattern baldness, I want to share a few words about attitude and expectations. Although I have never experienced pattern baldness, I have experienced some other things related to physical appearance that have given me insights into the insecurities and fears that can arise from something such as pattern baldness. In my case, I developed breasts as a boy, and they remained with me until the present day. (I have written another book on this subject.) I obsessed about this for decades, and I was miserable and insecure about it. Eventually, I came to realize that there’s actually nothing wrong with that. It’s my body. It looks the way it does. And I actually find that when I am happy with my body, then other people are too.

So while there is some possibility that herbs and lifestyle changes may reverse hair loss, they may not. Either way, consider that learning to accept your body as it is can only be helpful. Baldness isn’t inherently a bad thing. It doesn’t mean anything bad about you, and many people may find a bald head to be very attractive.
