“Hey!”

Mason was outside his cabin when he heard the low shout. Cutting up logs so they’d have enough for the next few days. He looked up to see North Winter walking toward him.

He hadn’t seen him since that day in Winterville when they’d nearly thrown punches. According to Alaska, North wanted to apologize but she’d told him to leave it for a while.

Probably for the best.

“Hi.” Mason nodded, his expression unchanging.

“I came over to check on Alaska’s generator. Looks like somebody beat me to it. Was it you?”

Was the man going to get worked up about a generator now? Mason didn’t have the patience for this. “Yeah, it was me.”

North nodded. “Thank you.”

It took a moment for the words to sink in. “For what?”

“For taking care of the generator. It was a nice thing to do.”

Mason put his axe down and looked North in the eye. He didn’t have time for guys who played games, but it didn’t look like Alaska’s cousin was doing anything other than being genuine. “She’s a neighbor.” He shrugged. “It would be rude not to help.”

North shoved his hands into his pockets. He was wearing work boots – the same as Mason – and a thick parka that covered his top half. But his head and his hands were bare. “Yeah, well, I appreciate it. It’s a worry for us, having her out here alone. I’m glad she has somebody else looking out for her.”

“She doesn’t need anybody looking out for her. She can take care of herself. I just happened to have some oil and a bit of time to spare.”

North looked at him carefully. There was a control to the man that Mason recognized from the court room. Somebody on their best behavior. He wondered who’d had a word with him and told him to be nice to Alaska’s new neighbor.

“I… ah… also wanted to apologize,” North said. “After my behavior the other week. I shouldn’t have squared up to you. It was wrong.”

“Apology accepted.”

North caught his eye and nodded. “Thank you.”

“But you know, if I was interested in your cousin, your caveman act wouldn’t stop me one bit,” Mason said, lifting a brow.

North looked surprised.

“She’s a good woman. She’s gonna make a guy very happy one day.”

“Yeah.” North swallowed. “I guess she is.”

“So maybe you should give her a break. She doesn’t need protecting by you or by me.”

North looked over his shoulder. “Anyway, I have to go. Got some deliveries to do.”

“Christmas trees?”

“Tis the season,” North said. Somehow those words made Mason want to laugh. Because North looked the exact opposite of somebody infected by the Christmas spirit.

Damn, he was grumpier than Mason, and that took something.

“Okay then. I have more logs to cut so…”

“Yeah. I’ll see you later.”

“Sure.”

“And you probably need to get your axe sharpened. It’s leaving dents in the cuts. Come over to the farm sometime and you can use my sharpener.”

Mason blinked. “Okay…”

North didn’t wait to hear anything else. He turned and walked away, his big feet leaving imprints in the freshly fallen snow.
