What Chief Butts or Lieutenant Fabrega did not say at the press conference was that forensic evidence to link Victor Paleologus with the murder of Kristine Johnson remained frustratingly elusive. Circumstances pointed a powerful finger of accusation, but Detective Obenchain and her team still needed something concrete, such as DNA, fingerprints, fibers, hairs, or witnesses.

A coroner technician had called Obenchain to report that the ligatures found on Kristi’s body might be Converse shoelaces. He had initiated contact with the manufacturer to see if a particular style of shoe could be associated with the laces. Also, during the autopsy, minuscule fibers had been found on the body, and what appeared to be human flesh showed up on clippings taken from her fingernails. Another search warrant sent specialists to the home on Skyline Drive at which the “audition” was supposed to take place, this time to collect fiber samples from the carpets for comparison to a few fibers found on Kristi’s body.

So far, the primary element connecting Paleologus to Kristi was the modus operandi, or MO—Victor’s pattern of offering women the opportunity to be involved in a James Bond film promotion. Three of his targets—Susan Murphy, Dawn Cooper, and Alice Walker—had told of hearing the same pitch from Victor. Obenchain, like Fabrega, suspected more would turn up. She was right.
