Around four o’clock, Nichelle cooked Frank’s dinner and placed a plate of warm food on his table. Next Wednesday she would be done with this legal bullshit and could move forward or backward, or whatever. She sat opposite Frank and opened her crossword book. She wanted to count how many puzzles she had left to solve, but she resisted the urge. No compulsive stuff, not tonight. She’d focus on the puzzle at hand.

“What’s an island east of Corsica?” she asked Frank. He sat there for a moment, thinking. In the window behind him, pink light hovered at the horizon.

“Sardinia?” Frank said.

She counted. “Too many letters.”

“Taipei?”

“Nope.”

She saw that Frank was fumbling with his silverware. Perhaps his eyes were foggier than she had thought. She moved her chair beside him and picked up his fork and knife. She cut the food into bite-sized chunks as he sat there and watched her slice into the potatoes and fish. She could not know exactly what he saw, but she was looking at food that she had prepared for a man with no family left. That lifted her spirits some. She noticed the flakes of white meat floating in sauce and the tender red skin that was separating from her boiled potatoes. She scooped some of the stew onto Frank’s fork using her fingers. Frank closed his eyes and opened his mouth. Her hand shook, but she raised the fork and she fed him. She fed him without dropping his food.
