“I NEED TO APOLOGIZE for my mother’s behavior,” Meadow said as soon as I pulled away from the curb.

“Your mother isn’t you, Meadow,” I pointed out.

“I know,” she said with a sigh. “I just want you to know that she’ll be difficult for you to win over.”

I smiled. “That implies that we may see each other often.”

When Meadow didn’t immediately respond, I glanced at her out of the corner of my eye. She’s blushing, I thought in amazement. From embarrassment, or something else? “Meadow, I’m not jumping the gun or anything—”

“It’s not that,” she said quickly. She turned in her seat and half-faced me as I drove. “Bern, I—no, we—had to go through a lot to get to where we’re at now, this very minute. I want to be here, with you, going to dinner and a movie. A date, a real date, with a real friend.” I glanced at her quickly and saw that she was smiling wistfully. “Getting here hasn’t been easy, has it?”

“No,” I said slowly. “No, it hasn’t.”

“Bern, this is a good thing,” Meadow continued. “We went from one misunderstanding to another, neither of us willing to really tell the other how we really feel—that is, until your letter.”

I took a deep breath. “I was desperate.”

“And I was stubborn,” she said. “Bern, I want you to be around long enough to get under my mother’s skin, and long enough for her to see what I see, and like you for you.”

I smiled. “How long will that take?”

“I don’t think it will take long,” she said with a chuckle. “I just want you to understand where she’s coming from.”

“And where’s that?” I asked.

“She really liked Tim,” Meadow explained. “Not necessarily Tim, but what he represented.”

“I see,” I said, my voice carefully neutral.

“I know that you don’t want to talk about him,” she said apologetically, “but it’s important for you to know. Bern, my mother was thrilled when I began to—well, change. Remember when I told you about my sister, and what she told me?”

“Yes,” I said with a nod.

“Mother was like that too.” Meadow sighed. “She loved the idea of me finally becoming popular—and when Tim asked me out, well, that just really, what’s the word I’m looking for—”

“Cemented?” I asked helpfully.

“No,” she said thoughtfully. “Validated. She felt validated. And when I broke it off—well, she was more upset than I was. Tim was everything that she hoped for in a boy that I was dating.”

“Yeah,” I said, as a tinge of bitterness crept into my voice. “Athletic, popular, honors student, active in student government—”

“—and not what I really wanted at all,” Meadow finished for me. “Oh, I thought I wanted what Tim is—but Bern, here’s the qualities that Mother didn’t want to hear about—arrogant, vain, self-centered, and...” Meadow’s voice suddenly trailed off.

“And what?” I asked.

I didn’t have to see Meadow at that moment to know that she was blushing again. “Never mind,” she finally said. “Any way, what I want is a someone that is nice,
