Bad Detectives

I was trying to do it all, to be a superwoman. Writing my own songs, doing shows, and still holding things at home together—cooking, cleaning, keeping four kids washed and fed and clothed. I was tired about all the time. Burning out fast. One day I came home from another road tour with the Wilburns and Doo took off like a rocket. It was like his shift was over and the whistle blew. It made me so mad! I thought, Doolittle’s free as a bird, going out to have a good ole time, leaving me at home having to do everything else. Again. Just like in Washington state.

The difference this time was I was busting my tail to make it in the music business. It was hard work. Add four kids on top of all that and, trust me, it wasn’t easy.

So Doo’s shenanigans did not sit well with me. The next morning, I asked what he’d been doing out so late. He said, “Me and Doyle was just having a few beers, honey. Time got away from us.” When I asked him where they’d been, he got mad at me for even asking. He said, “Woman, you ain’t my keeper!” I said, “Like hell I’m not!”

Later that afternoon after he left, I took a cab over to Patsy’s to help her pack for her trip. I told her how irritated I was with Doo. My mind started running wild with all kinds of crazy thoughts. I said, “Patsy, what if he has a girlfriend again? Here I am working my tail off and he’s running around on me!” The more I talked the more I got worked up. Patsy tried to calm me down, but I was too worked up. Finally she said, “Loretta, where’s Mooney right now?” I said, “Heck if I know! Probably out with a big old blonde bimbo.” The tears started rolling. Lord, I was a mess, carryin’ on.

Patsy stood up and hollered for Charlie. She yelled, “Charlie, start the car!” Patsy said, “Come on, Loretta. Let’s do us a little detective work. If Mooney’s out there, we’ll find him.” Charlie poked his head in and said, “What’s up?”

Patsy said, “Charlie, Loretta is feeling down so we are going to cheer her up. Let’s take her for a ride downtown, show her the city lights.” She turned to me and said, “Loretta, you ever seen Printers Alley at night? It’s a hoot.” Then she winked at me—in other words, Hush. I thought, Lord have mercy.

Me, Patsy, and Charlie all loaded up in their car and headed for downtown, the three of us in the front seat. Charlie had the radio on and music was playing. I can remember Buck Owens’s “Act Naturally” was out around that time, and that was on the radio. We weren’t really talking, just letting the music fill up the silence. I’d dried my tears, but I was still upset. I thought, What if we do find Doolittle? What then? I hadn’t really planned on tracking him down.
