Chapter Six

Maze and Joni sat down. He dug in right away. The food here was always the best. Home cooked and great care was taken for it all.

Joni ate quietly and then she pushed her plate away.

Looking over, he noticed she had eaten very little. “What’s the matter?”

Her head shot up and she looked at him. “Nothing, why?”

Motioning to her plate he said, “You hardly ate anything.”

“I’m full.”

He snorted and wiped his mouth with a napkin. “Full? One drumstick, and like two bites of potato salad?”

“It was all I could eat.”

Narrowing his eyes at her, he asked, “When did you eat last?”

She paused to think about it. “Yesterday morning maybe?”

He looked stunned as he asked, “Maybe?”

“Why are you asking about what I eat?” She furrowed her brows at him.

He sighed. “You can’t eat much because your stomach has shrunk. And that has to be from not eating enough.”

“It’s okay. I’m well...used to it.”

Maze felt disgusted. “Well, get unused to it and other things will be changing too,” he growled.

Her eyes rounded and she looked a little scared. “Are you mad at me?”

Maze shook his head. Yes, he was fucking blazing mad. “Not at you, Joni.” He grabbed her hand. “I’m mad at how you’ve been treated.”

She pulled her hand from his. “I don’t want you to feel sorry for me, Maze.”

Wow, he wasn’t handling this right. “I didn’t mean that.”

“Then what did you mean?” she asked.

“I should have...” He shook his head.

“Maze, it’s all in the past. I hope.”

“No hoping, Joni. You will never know a hungry day again. No one will ever hit you or yell at you.”

She looked confused.

Patting her hand, he said, “At least, drink the orange juice?”

Shaking her head, she unscrewed the cap and said, “Yes, mommy.” Then she paused as if she had said something she shouldn’t.

Maze chuckled then patted her hand. “Mommy Maze? I like it.”

She laughed.

Maze loved that sound and he vowed to hear it more and more.

After everyone had finished and the clean up was done, Stone came over and sat down across from the couple.

Then Mayhem, Maze’s brothers and a few more came over to sit down as well.

Stone gave her a nod. “Around here, we like to be prepared. Just because we are a legit club, doesn’t mean we don’t get our fair share of trouble. Just take your time and tell us what you know. It could help, ok?”

Joni sighed hard and shivered as she exhaled. Tucking a strand of her dark hair behind her ear, she looked at everyone before she settled on Stone. Then she looked at Clarence and said, “I’m so sorry my family put you and your family through this. It's been a mess from the get go.” Shaking her head, she admitted, “My dad has been behind a certain eight ball for years. He likes to gamble and he usually loses big time. He always thinks he’s gonna win big with one more hand. But he never does. My mom tried to tell him the house always wins by hook or by crook but he always thought he could beat the odds.
