In order to come fully back from the dead, First Father had to name all the parts of his body. When he named each part, that part became whole again. Alas, First Father’s memory wasn’t what it used to be. He could barely remember what a body was made of.

First Father did fairly well with all the details of his arms and legs and torso. But when it came to his face, he grew quite confused.

“Father, you must try to remember,” Hunahpu pleaded.

“You’ll only get back the parts that you can name,” Xbalanque added.

“Let me think,” grumbled First Father. “There’s the nose. And the mouth. And the eyes. But really, I can’t remember one thing more.”

“Nothing more?” asked Xbalanque.

“Not a single thing,” said First Father.

First Father still had no hair, whiskers, ears, eyebrows, eyelids, eyelashes, lips, or even skin. The truth was, his face didn’t look a whole lot different than it had before. It was still little more than a skull.

But there was nothing to be done. The Hero Twins couldn’t give him any hints, or the magic wouldn’t work. First Father would have a skull-like face for the rest of eternity …
