CAROL

* * *

The same day Carol hears about the break-in, her hip flares up so badly that she can’t go to work. She can’t walk without pain, and she wonders for a moment whether fear can do that—whether it can settle in your joints and grow like an infection or a tumor.

She sits in her apartment in her favorite chair with a heat pack on her hip, a morning talk show on TV.

Fear of what’s out there is one thing. But now she’s also afraid of what’s going to happen if she can’t work. She’s got some savings, but the money won’t last long.

What then?

She’ll have to ask Ted for help, she supposes, though to her, that doesn’t seem right. It’s a mother who helps her son, not the other way around.

At night, when she eases herself into bed, she lies awake late, trying to sleep. When she finally drifts off, she dreams of masked intruders, the barrel of a gun in her face.
