CHAPTER THREE
Lee’s beast was even less impressed with him than he was with himself as he swam for the bank. Growling within him like a rabid beast; he had the feeling that he was going to hear about that mistake for a long time to come. His mate was wily… He thought as he shook off the excess water from his fur and started off after her again. That was something he was going to have to watch out for.
Mindful now of the watery pitfalls that she had led him through. He was slower as he made sure that he scented what was in front of him, but still a match for her to catch her up. Her scent grew stronger as he rounded the boulder instead of climbing onto it, and as he rounded the rock the loud whoosh of something coming at him at high speed made him leap to the side and hit to ground as he rolled over the terrain.
His eyes caught sight of the large low hanging branch the swung back and forth close to his head; while he pulled himself up onto all four paws, and he growled in disbelief. Was his mate really trying to kill him or just maim him a little? That damn branch could have taken his head off and at the sound of her fast paws tearing away from him; he growled long and hard with menace in mind. She needed to be stopped.
The trouble with setting a trap like that was that she now had him directly on her tail. He was certain to catch her up, and it was only fitting that he did considering he was her mate, and yet the sight of his wide eyed shock when she ran off and let go of the branch was the funniest thing she had seen in a while. She could hear his warning growls as he raced up behind her and she felt her legs grow tired from the chase… But still she kept going.
Maxine timed it to the very last second. Slowing enough to bring him right up behind her and yet keeping just ahead of him so that at the last moment, when she knew he would pounce, she would have the upper hand. And she did… He launched his body through the air towards her just as she broke right and moved out of his way.
She watched him sail past her as his head turned to see exactly where he was going to end up, and she heard the surprised yelp as all four paws hit what they like to refer to as the slippery slope and he started downwards. His paws seemed to want to backpedal against the ground, but there really wasn’t anything to grip onto with his claws. Down he went, gaining speed against the polished rock, growling like a mad-wolf as she took the slower, more sedate route down the hill.
There probably wasn’t a dark curse left that he hadn’t bit out on his journey down that slope.
