CHAPTER TEN
THREE WEEKS of silence from her daughter, Kristin decided, was more than enough. âErin, love, do you remember Dr. Rose?â
âYeah.â She didnât raise her face from the book on whales she was studying. Kristin decided to ignore the absence of âYes, maâam.â
âIâd like to give her a call and make an appointment to talk to her.â
At that, her daughter looked up. âWhy?â The reserve in her blue eyes said she knew perfectly well why.
But Kristin would explain anyway. âBecause finding out that Matt is your father is a pretty important thing to have happen. You havenât talked to me about it, or anybody else. I thought Dr. Rose might be a more comfortable person to listen to how youâre feeling.â
Erin shrugged. âIâm not feelinâ anything.â
Kristin tightened her fists in her lap. âOkay. So you can tell her about whales when you see her next week.â
Erin shrugged again, and didnât say anything at all.
After leaving Jenny with her mother on Monday afternoon, Kristin drove to the office of Rose Howard, the therapist theyâd seen a few times during Kristinâs divorce from Luke. Warm and solid, with dark skin and dark eyes and a penchant for bright colors, âDr. Roseâ had been easy for all of them to talk to. Kristin hoped she could work the same magic with Erin now.
She greeted them in the waiting area. âWell, hello, Erin Brennan. Give me five.â
Erin put out her hand and, looking surprised, grinned.
âGood to see you.â Dr. Rose gave Kristin a one-armed hug. âHave a seat. Erin and I are gonna arm wrestle.â She ushered the little girl into her office and shut the door. In a few minutes, Kristin heard shrieks of laughter she identified as Roseâs and Erinâs. She relaxed a little into her chair.
At the end of the session, Rose called Kristin into the office. âHave a seat, Mom.â She folded her hands and looked over at Erin. âOur girl here really doesnât feel much like talking. Thatâs okayânobody has to share their thoughts if they donât want to. Iâve told her that Iâll be glad to listen even if she wants to call me late at night and talk on the phone.â Rose handed Kristin a card. âShe can reach me at the number I wrote on the back anytime. If I do happen to be busy, Iâll call her back as quick as I can.â
Kristin took the card and swallowed her disappointment. âThanks for your time today, Rose.â
âMy pleasure. Erin, you know that candy jar out in the waiting area? I think thereâs a piece thatâs got your name on it.â
âThanks!â Erin hurried out.
Rose partially closed the door and looked at Kristin. âSheâs feeling very isolated. Doesnât want to talk about Matt or Luke or you at all.â
âThat sounds terrible. Canât we do something?â
âJust be there. Let her know you care and youâll listen. She did say you gave her a diary and sheâs writing things down. Thatâs something. Her anger is going onto the page, at least a little.
