FIFTEEN

JONAH

My heart is racing as the SUV pulls into the driveway. My former pack's farm is still the same. It hasn't changed a bit since I left. But there's a sense of unease surrounding it.

Familiar faces peer at the car as it pulls past the main hall and down the side track toward the small, family cottage that used to be my home.

Robert pulls the SUV to a stop, and I slip out of the vehicle without hesitation.

"Jonah." One of the elders greets me outside the door. His expression is unreadable, but I can see the tension in his movements.

"Where is she?"

"In her room," the elder says, nodding over his shoulder toward the cabin.

"What happened? Why isn't she with her mate?"

"We don't know." The elder sighs. "She won't speak to anyone. She just showed up last night, covered in mud and bruises. She's been sitting in her room, crying and refusing to talk to anyone. She just keeps asking for you.

"I see. Did you call Mateo?"

The elder shakes his head. "Given the state she's in…we weren't sure if she would even want to see him."

"Do you think he…?" I let the question hang, unable to finish saying it aloud.

"I'm not sure," the elder admits. "But I can't imagine who else would have done something like this."

"I see," I mutter, squaring my shoulders and fixing my gaze on the front door. Despite our disagreements in the past, she's still my little sister. The idea of anyone hurting her fills me with rage. I move past the elder and enter the cabin.

Ever since we lost our parents, Mer and I have always been close. She's the only family I have left. I thought I could trust Mateo to look after her in my place. Clearly, I was wrong.

"Mer," I say, knocking lightly on her door.

There's a long pause before I hear her voice. "Jonah?"

"It's me."

"Jonah," she gasps, and a moment later, the door swings open. She throws her arms around my neck and buries her face in my shoulder. Her body shakes with deep sobs.

"Mer," I whisper, stroking her hair. "What happened?"

She sniffles as she tries to get her emotions under control and then slowly lifts her face. "Mateo," she whispers, her eyes red and swollen. "He…he…"

"What did he do, Mer?" I ask softly, trying to keep my voice steady.

"He hit me," she says, her voice barely audible.

I feel the air leave my lungs as the words sink in. "He hit you," I repeat slowly.

She nods.

"Did he hurt you anywhere else?"

"Just bruised my ribs," she mumbles, wiping away tears.

"Why would he do something like that?" I growl as I hold her protectively against my chest. "I thought he loved you."

"He…he thought I was cheating on him." She shakes her head slowly. "I'm…I'm pregnant, Jonah."

"But…" My voice trails off. Pregnancies outside of breeding season are rare but not impossible. From what I know, it's something that tends to run in families. Our mother got pregnant with Mer outside of breeding season, but my birth was seasonal like most other pups.
