Chapter 13

Cara

Cara was so nervous she could puke. What the hell had she been thinking, inviting True back into her sacred space? She’d taken a massive gamble and it could more than blow up in her face. It could annihilate her whole world and everyone she knew and cared about. She’d been so much more confident than she felt going into True’s office on Monday. As the week wore on, she’d started to doubt herself.

At the very least, she wouldn’t be a slave to True’s commands, performing weird shit on top of her desk in her private office. Tonight, she was at the bookshop, with her family and friends surrounding her. Tonight, she was the one in her element and True was the one out of place. What could be worse than killing someone with kindness?

True walked in, seemingly bringing a blast of winter in with her, the hot and cold air meeting and shimmering around her. Cara realized after she blinked that there was nothing there. No air, no wavy lines. It was just her vision messed up by the black spots she suddenly saw. The whole place seemed to freeze even though no one stopped moving or setting up or talking. In reality, it was Cara who stopped moving. Who stopped breathing.

She watched as True moved further into the bookstore, skirting around the displays that had been pushed off to the side to make room for the rows of folding chairs Poppy brought in for the comedy show. She disappeared down a row of freestanding shelving.

Cara had a scanning gun in one hand and was standing there not using it, since at the moment no one was checking out just then. She’d been promoting materials all night and ringing up purchases.

It was the third pass the hat comedy night that the bookshop was hosting. Cara really didn’t have to do much other than offer the space and prepare it beforehand. Since she’d already done that, she was stuck looking silly with the scan gun, waiting for new customers.

Quiet and shy Poppy had shocked them all when she’d said that she was thinking about giving comedy a shot. Raine had just brought Bryn to their book club for the first time and since she was studying business, she’d come up with the idea of combining their two interests and doing the comedy night at the bookshop to increase revenue and bring new customers into the shop. Mostly, it was Poppy who organized everything, including the lineup, posters, and promotional materials ahead of the event.

Granny Alberta went rigid beside Cara and she knew she’d spotted True again. No one could get past her granny. Cara swore there hadn’t been a single theft in the store in all the years it had been open.

“Miss Morino came back?” her granny asked, watching as True browsed at the far shelves.

“I invited her,” Cara admitted. “I thought she might enjoy it.”

Cara was saved from further explanation when an adorable older man blocked her view of True as he hobbled up to the counter with a tray of cookies for her to ring in.
