Secret Weapon

The next morning, I entered my office with a mixture of calm and anxiety. Kyra, my spy, and Jasper, the captain of the guards, were waiting for me with serious expressions on their faces.

“We caught the assassin, but he killed himself before we could get any information,” Kyra said. “So for now, we can only assume that Lord Ivan was behind the attack. I will continue to investigate, my lord.”

“And I will tighten security at the castle,” Jasper said. “No more assassins will sneak in here. In the meantime, I will continue training our men.”

“Thank you,” I said. “Keep up the good work.”

Later that morning, a messenger arrived with a letter from the king. I eagerly broke the seal and read the letter, feeling a wave of relief as I learned the king had accepted my report of Ivan’s criminal activities and promised to take action.

At the council meeting that followed, I shared the King’s letter with my advisors. Some were pleased that the King had shown his support for me as the new Baron of Ellanduin, while others were still concerned about the threat of further attacks from Ivan.

Ivan had at least seven hundred soldiers, while we had only two hundred, so if there was an open battle, we would most likely lose. Our only chance was to hold out behind the castle walls. But I still didn’t want to imagine the damage that would be done if that happened. We need another plan besides the usual training and fortification.

Then I heard the good news. After the meeting, Master Gillian spoke. “My lord, we may have a secret weapon to help us if Lord Ivan attacks.”

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “What kind of weapon?”

“Brendan, Becca’s father, the late Master of Science, had developed some cannons before he died years ago,” he explained. “Your uncle, the former Baron, stopped the project because he couldn’t find anyone he could trust to continue Brendan’s work. The cannons are still kept in one of the towers of the castle. I don’t know their condition now, but if they’re in good shape, you might be interested in using them.”

My mind raced with possibilities. With these cannons, we could defend our people and our land more effectively against Ivan or any other enemy.

“Let’s go check them out,” I said.

Master Gillian and I went to the tower, where the cannons were stored in one of the rooms. As we climbed the stairs to the tower where the cannons were kept, I felt a growing sense of excitement.

When we reached the top, I gazed in awe at the massive weapons before me. The metal gleamed in the sunlight streaming through the window, and I could see the intricate mechanisms that powered the cannons.

“We need to get these ready for use,” I said to Master Gillian. “Can you do it?”

“I have to learn the mechanism. Becca will help me. She’s smart and she can read her father’s notes. And ideally, we should conduct trials to see if these cannons can actually work well.
