The English Speaking Union3 had been founded in 1918 to foster ‘a good understanding between the peoples of the USA and the British Commonwealth’. The Duke of Edinburgh had become its President in 1952, and would serve until 2013. In 1948 Eliot had chaired the ‘Books Across the Sea’ initiative; thousands of books were sent between the United States and Britain as part of the scheme.

He told Mary of a party at the Institut Français:

It was very dreary. I sat next to Bertie Russell – he had his new wife with him but didn’t introduce me. I do find him trying – he gives me the creeps – one of the Successful Failures.
