Chapter Sixteen

Ajani

Activity had kept Ajani focused on the tasks required to transport the files back to the plane. Kelvin had been true to his word and carried the bulk of the files they’d commandeered within his many large tentacles. The coded files meant getting them messed up wasn’t an issue. Not that Kelvin wasn’t mindful of that when he’d got them to help stack them in boxes they’d found on the plane.

Kelvin had returned to the building with Magnus and a small pouch, only to return without it. Ajani was aware there were magic users in the world. He’d always been wary of folks who could conjure up shit after all the playing the scientists had done with his body. That was a kind of dark magic. He’d felt it, endured it, and wanted no part of it.

Staying with the plane and Marvin should have been easier. He’d had a thought he could help his mate get clean again. Only Marvin had taken himself off to the shower room and locked the door. When he’d returned smelling fresh, in clean clothes, Ajani expected him to come and cuddle up next to him like he’d done on the initial plane trip. No, he sat on his own looking at the boxes piled high containing the files.

Was he worried about what they might find in there? It was hard to guess with Marvin blocking him. Ajani was used to Marvin being open with him. This new turn of events was proving unsettling.

Duron nudged his shoulder and lifted his chin in Marvin’s direction. “What’s wrong with Marvin?” His voice was a low rumble.

“That ain’t your business, Duron.” Ajani kept his voice as low as Duron’s, so it didn’t carry over the noise of the plane. He also kept a tight lid on his thoughts.

“He’s been a part of my life for a long time, same as you. That means it’s my business, too.” The hard edge was cutting, as was the light of danger in Duron’s gaze that held Ajani’s.

The earlier thought about Duron’s feeling towards Marvin sat between them. He glanced once again at Marvin, who was not paying anyone any attention. “He’s my mate.” Ajani pointed out his ape there, showing Duron who was in charge.

Duron came closer, his nose nearly pressing against Ajani’s. “I fucking know that. I can fucking scent it.” The growl in the back of his throat was a threat many would heed.

Ajani pressed forward, using the years they’d been together to hold back the urge to answer the threat. “Then what’s the issue?”

“Like you don’t know!” Then the heat died in his eyes and Ajani felt a slice of pain for Duron at the understanding he wanted what Ajani was lucky to have: Marvin. “I just hoped… one day…”

The defeat in Duron’s voice led Ajani to sling an arm over Duron’s massive shoulders. “I’m sorry.” He was—not just for Marvin being his mate, but that Duron hadn’t been given such a rare gift by the Fates. “You’ll find your mate.
