Chapter 14

Mitch arrived home that night and read the note Rose had left, and was in turn first annoyed then more disappointed by its contents. He did not have to dwell on it for long as his home phone rang interrupting his thoughts.

He picked it up, and heard the familiar sound of Lucy’s voice at the other end, greeting him.

“You back then?” he began, rather lamely.

“No, I’m ringing you from the plane, of course I’m back silly. Did you miss me?” She asked cheekily.

“That’s a bit of an unfair question; anyway changing the subject, how are you, how was the flight?”

“Great, and good, thanks. Don’t you want to know where I am Mitch?”

“Okay, where are you? Is this some sort of trick question?”

“Oh, what are you doing tomorrow, night that is?”

“Umm nothing I think,” he replied cautiously.

“Great, come pick me up at 8, and I’ll take you to dinner?”

“Yeah?”

“Yes, I need some good company to cheer me up, and also I want to talk. Well, do we have a date or what?”

“Why not, yes. But you want me to come down to the cottage?”

“Oh, no silly, I’m two streets away from you.”

“Where exactly?” he asked quite puzzled about the whole conversation.

“At Jane and Rob’s. I’m staying here for the time being.”

A note of concern edged into his voice as he replied, “I don’t understand, why with Jane, is something wrong, what’s happened?”

“Meet me tomorrow, and I’ll tell you all… hang on Mitch… yes ok, supper’s up, got to go. Jane sends her love, see you tomorrow ok, 8 o’clock?”

“Ok, give my love to Jane…”

“Bye!” Lucy said as she hung up.

Mitch stared at the receiver before slowly replacing it in its cradle, and allowed his eyes to glance around the room, as if half expecting Lucy and the others to suddenly burst into the room, shouting something like, “Got you, tee hee!”

But they didn’t.

He sat down heavily on one of his two sumptuous armchairs, to try and collect his thoughts. What was going on, he wondered, dare he think, she had had enough of Jack, no he mustn’t even think that, they were two of his best friends.

He got up, realising he had been sat there for over half an hour, and felt quite reinvigorated, and suddenly hungry too. Feeling far happier than he should, he went off to his kitchen to see what goodies the fridge held for him.

Rose drove back to Mitch’s apartment around 5pm the next evening, and parked outside again on the pavement. She rushed up to his place and let herself in, Mitch was still at work. By the front door on the left hand side tight against the wall, was an antique dresser, which passed as a coat stand, made of solid oak. Two tiny drawers were set into the wooden top. In the right hand drawer was a set of keys, which she deftly pocketed, and was out the door again before one could say, hoi!

She drove to where Mitch parked his car and jumping out of hers, she opened his driver’s door and getting in started up his Porsche.
