'I don't think your stay out at Lightning Ridge has done you any good,' he grumbled as he did indeed extract her suitcase from the boot of the car and carried it up the steps, placing it at Gemma's feet while he unlocked the door.
'That Ma is a tough old bird, if ever I saw one. She threatened me that if did the wrong thing by you again she was going to personally come down and flay every inch of flesh from my body with a bull whip, starting on my appendages.'
Gemma laughed. 'Good for Ma. There again, she might have to stand in line.
After me I think maybe Celeste and Kirsty and Lenore might like to have a go at you. I wouldn't think Ava or Jade would be too forgiving, either, if you start blotting your copybook again. Maybe I should even call Melanie in England and ask her what a suitable punishment might be.'
Nathan adopted an expression of feigned terror. 'God, don't do that. That woman used to frighten the life out of me! I can only admire Royce for taking her on. There again, any fool who would drive Formula One cars for a living has no appreciation of danger.'
'Melanie was a very warm and misunderstood lady,' Gemma insisted, brushing past Nathan to go inside, clicking on the light switch as she went.
Immediately, the huge crystal chandelier hanging from the vaulted ceiling flooded the spacious foyer with light.
'I've heard the same said about Lucrezia Borgia,' Nathan drawled. 'Er...' He hesitated, throwing her a hopeful glance. 'What bedroom do you want me to put your case in?'
'Very funny, Nathan. The bedroom I've always slept in when I stay here, and it isn't yours.'
'Can't blame a guy for trying,' he muttered, and trudged on up the stairs. 'Put some coffee on, will you?' he called back over his shoulder. 'And see what food you can rustle up for us?'
When she didn't answer he stopped, turned and smiled down at her with a sheepish look on his face. 'Please?'
