My hands shook as I reached for the button in the elevator. What if it didn’t work? What if I was locked in—again? Despite the past hour, when July had changed my bandages and assured me that I was healing well, then let me shower and change into a pair of jeans and a tank top instead of another ridiculously revealing ensemble, I still couldn’t quite believe I was going to be able to see my friends.
“I’m glad you’ve come around to see what a wonderful man Sir Kenosi is,” July said, shooting me a shy smile as the elevator doors slid closed.
I grunted in response. It was kinda weird being alone with her now that she’d been up close and personal with my vagina.
“Your friends have been staying here,” she said as the elevator stopped on the third floor. “In the servants’ quarters.”
“Wait, what?” I asked, skidding to a stop halfway out the elevator doors. “They’re not servants. Sir Kenosi said they were in the guest quarters.”
“Oh, no,” she said, giggling and waving a hand to dismiss the idea. “Sir Kenosi wants everyone to contribute in some way while they are here, though. It makes them feel like part of the community.”
I didn’t see how putting guests to work would make them feel anything but resentful, but then, we weren’t in the Ocelot Kingdom. Customs were different here. I tried not to think about what Camila had thought of that. Instead, I hurried down the hallway calling my sister’s name. The servants’ quarters looked kind of like a nice hotel, with doors opening off a hallway with wall sconces and plush carpeting.
A door burst open, and Lord Balam swept me into his arms, crushing me to his chest so hard I couldn’t breathe. “What the fuck, Itzel?”
“You’re telling me,” I managed from inside his vicelike grip. “Where’s Camila?”
“She’s fine,” Lord Balam said. “A royal pain in the ass, like usual, but fine.”
Relief flooded through me, and I relaxed into Balam’s arms. To my horror, tears suddenly sprang into my eyes. “Thank all the gods,” I said, my voice muffled against his shirt.
“I’m sure Her Highness will be royally pissed if we don’t go see her right away,” he said. “I just had to see you for a second first. How are you?” He held me at arm’s length, surveying my face.
I swallowed back my tears and gave a small laugh. “I’m fine,” I said. “More than fine. I’m great. I just want to make sure she’s okay. I have to see it with my own eyes.”
Lord Balam studied me a moment longer, long enough to make me squirm. I didn’t know what he’d seen in his oracle, but he obviously knew something had happened to me. “Okay,” he said at last. He pulled me in and planted a firm kiss on my mouth.
When he released me, I followed him down the hall to another room, where he knocked on the door. I started to tell him that she was my sister, and I didn’t have to knock, but then I stopped myself.
