âWhy are we here?â Jax demanded.
He knew he sounded like an asshole, but he didnât care. Between the lack of sleep and his frustration at Declan for having arranged that little impromptu therapy session without so much as a heads-up and having to stand by and watch as Poppy put herself back in that fucking alley, this day had gone straight to hell.
And it wasnât even noon.
âJax.â F.B.I. Special Agent Noah Killion greeted him as he and Poppy followed Declan and Grady into the private conference room. âAlways a pleasure.â
A sharp fuck you was on the tip of his tongue, but as he opened his mouth to spew the words at the cocky SOB, Jax caught Poppy watching him from the corner of his eye. For her sake, and her sake only, he bit back the words he wanted to say and greeted Noahâs partner, instead.
âCrenshaw.â He dipped his chin to Special Agent Wade Crenshaw. âThat baby pop out yet, or what?â
âAny day now.â Wade beamed.
Figuring he should probably make introductions, Jax pointed first to Noah and then to Wade. âPoppy Campbell, meet Super Special Agent Noah Killion and his trusty side-kick, Special Agent Wade Crenshaw.â
âNice to meet you.â Noah shook Poppyâs hand.
Wade followed suit.
Seconds later, Maggie rushed in. âHey, guys. Sorry Iâm late.â
All eyes turned to the sweet M.E. as she went straight to Noah and gave him a quick peck on the lips. âHey.â
âThanks for coming.â
âOf course.â Maggie walked over to Poppy. âHey, there. How are you doing today?â
âBetter than the last time you saw me,â Poppy chuckled.
Maggie grinned. âI bet.â
Motioning toward the long oval table, Noah told them all, âIf everyone will have a seat, weâll get through this as quickly as possible.â
Thank fuck.
Still standing at the front of the room, the formidable manâa guy Jax had actually grown toâ¦dare he say itâ¦likeâhanded his wife a small remote. âItâs cued and ready to go.â
âThanks.â Maggie flashed the man a loving smile.
With a click of a button, the large screen permanently mounted on the wall behind her lit up. Filling most of the white space was the mugshot of the man whoâd attacked Poppy in her apartment less than twenty-four-hours prior.
âThis is Paul Wheatley.â She looked to Jax and Poppy. âIâm sure you both recognize him.â
âDec already told us youâd identified him,â he let her know. âBut Iâm assuming since weâve been summoned here that thereâs more to the story.â
âMuch more.â Maggie nodded. âDuring my initial external exam, I discovered this on Mr. Wheatleyâs back.â She clicked another button and a different image appeared.
One of Wheatley shirtless and lying on his stomach.
Poppy frowned as she studied the macabre image. âIs that a crow?â
Ah, hell.
âItâs a raven,â Jax muttered beside her.
His chest tightened as he stared at the familiar markings.
Square in the middle of Wheatleyâs shoulder blades was a very realistic-looking human skull. Sitting on top with its wings stretched wide was a raven. Each detailed feather visible thanks to the artistâs keen eye and ability to properly outline and shade.
