Okay, Mr. Knight. Lead the way.

That damn guilt began eating away at Declan’s gut. He hated that Skye couldn’t know his real name. Hated the sound of his alias rolling off her tongue.

Just once, Declan wanted to hear Skye utter the name King. He wanted her to look him in the eyes and know the man she was staring at.

He wanted her to know him. The real him. Not some former truck driver who now owned part of a nightclub.

Soon, Dec. Hopefully, you’ll be able to tell her soon.

Praying his inner voice was right, Declan led them both into the trees. He came to a stop a few short minutes later.

“Well.” He turned to Skye. “What do you think?”

Looking behind him, Skye’s expression turned awestruck as she soaked in the same majestic beauty he’d come to love. It was an overlook just off the trail. One with a massively large boulder perfect for an afternoon picnic in the woods.

“Oh, my gosh!” She smiled back at him. “The view is absolutely breathtaking.”

“It definitely is.” Only he wasn’t looking at the beautiful mountain landscape. He was looking straight at her.

“This is incredible, Dec.” Skye walked back over to him. “Thank you.”

“You haven’t even had the food yet.”

“True.” She pretended to consider this. “Maybe I should hold onto my gratitude until after lunch.”

“Maybe.”

Laughing together, the two went over to the flattest part of the boulder. Setting the cooler and bag down, Declan got to work setting everything up. He’d tried to think of everything…

A blanket.

Champagne.

Two crystal flutes.

A main course.

And of course, dessert.

“Wow.” Skye looked at the generous spread. “When I asked you to pick up lunch, I was expecting something like pizza or burgers. But this is…wow!”

“I thought you could use a break from reality.” Lord knows, he could. “And I know you love Italian, so…”

Declan lifted the foil lid off of the largest of the three to-go containers.

“Chicken alfredo?” Skye’s eyes lit up. “Seriously?”

“And a salad.” He uncovered the freshly prepared Caesar concoction. “And breadsticks.”

Pointing at the remaining container, she asked him curiously, “What’s in that one?”

“That is dessert.”

“You didn’t.”

With a sly grin, he uncovered it just enough to give her a peek. “Italian cheesecake with strawberries on the side.”

“I could kiss you right now.”

“What’s stopping you?”

He purposely used the exact same wording she had in his apartment the night before. Not missing a beat, Skye walked over to him, dropped to her knees beside him, and pressed her lips to his. “Thank you.”

“Surprised?”

“Very much.” She nodded.

“Good. Now, let’s eat before it gets too cold.”

Once the meal was finished—minus the dessert because they were both too stuffed for that—the two of them laid on the blanket and looked up at the sky. They stayed like that for quite a while, simply enjoying each other’s company while surrounded by nature.

“Thank you,” Skye eventually broke the silence.

With his hands resting beneath his head, Declan turned to her. “For what?”

“This.” She shifted to her side so she was facing him. “Everything.”

“You’re welcome. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if you’d think this was a good idea or totally lame.
