âCome on, wake up, Snowflake. Weâre a half mile off.â Shaw ruffled Yrielâs fur, and he stretched, sitting up and blinking. The tangible, thick scent of the Vegas strip burned his nostrils. Yriel groaned and crawled into the back seat, shifting as he rustled into his clothes.
âI sincerely hope that I donât pick up sun in wolf form.â Yriel rolled around, wrestling into his clothes and combing his hair. âI seriously loathe pants right now.â
âSPF 70, baby!â Mark giggled and rubbed a deodorant stick of something over his arms and face again. The stuff scented like baby wipes, a perfume that had lingered on the pups, and made him give an extra sniff. Powdery. Floral and soothing in a way.
Reaching back, Shaw gave Yriel a pat on the shoulder and they headed into a hotel near the strip where they avoided the front desk, walking straight back. Yriel and Mark kept their hoodies up, and it didnât seem to faze the attendants. They were used to their sort.
âWhat floor?â Shaw glanced about.
âTop one.â Yriel loaded up into an elevator with Shaw and Mark then pressed the top floor where it scanned his fingerprint. âSomeoneâs bound to greet me at the top. Play dumb, Shaw.â Yriel kept his head low and hands shoved into his pockets. âI need to concentrate.â
Yriel let his power flow, the distinctive sensation he got when his mind touched the minds of others, drawing it to his will and want. Like fingertips brushing dust on the surface of seldom-touched things, he plucked the minds of his fellow councilmen, alerted to his presence. Immediately, he sent waves of calm and collected thoughts through their minds, warping them as he strolled in, lifting his chin.
âLord Nicodemus! Youâre early. I thought your omega neededââ a councilmen spoke. From his tawny skin and poor taste in facial hair, he was likely of Maymunâs clan. Yriel had to pick his mind to remember.
âWell, one knows how to end an omegaâs heat early, donât we?â Yriel rolled his eyes and sneered at the man as his eyes widened in realization. âAndâ¦whatâs with⦠Is that Shaw Timber?â
Shaw remained silent and Yriel glanced over his shoulder, as if heâd forgotten the alpha was there.
âOne supposes. Heâs been rather attached to me for a while. And since my omega is now carrying, itâs prudent I have a good guard on him.â Yriel let a sharp thought prick the manâs mind, sending a jolt of fear. Despite having a lifetime of experience learning his gifts, he had to work slowly, boiling a frog. One degree at a time.
âOh my. Arenât you afraid of the shifter council?â the vampire gaspedâ¦the vampire. He had a name and the more Yriel tried to recall, the more it slipped away and he snapped his fingers. Amal! He was a turn of Maymunâs before they implemented one-turn law. Not that they held aristocracy to that standard. To them, the laws were more suggestions than anything.
âNo. Iâm not. Now whereâs the dossier? They said we were voting on some important things, but nobody sent me an email.
