Chapter 12: The Titan Loads

Back in Belize, after the plane was safe in the air, Freddy and George met with Georgette and gave him another twenty-five grand. Freddy said that Georgette was almost shocked that he was actually keeping his part of the bargain. Georgette told him he was one of the few people he’d ever dealt with who was a true man of his word. For the most part, Georgette was right. Freddy always managed to keep most of the pie for himself. However if he promised you a piece, you could pretty much count on getting it.

A couple of weeks later, Freddy invited me and Mickey over to his house and gave us each a new Rolex and a semi-automatic assault rifle as a little bonus. He also gave me a brown paper bag filled with my payment for the last load. Mickey probably had to wait a while for his money since he was going to need a small truck to haul it all in. The two of them spoke of retiring, and I said I was going to take some time off and relax. Mickey and I left together, and went out that night and hit a few bars. I still liked him, although our relationship had become strained since I lost the Twin Bonanza at Ft. Pierce. My “brother for life” status only lasted for about a month after the Titan crash. We had a great time that night though, as we had just made a lot of money and neither one of us had a care in the world. We talked about getting together down in the Islands in a couple of months, and Mickey also told me I should come out to a drop zone that a buddy of his owned in Arizona, where I could fly some skydiver loads in his buddy’s DC-6. The DC-6 was the classic four-engine airliner from the forties and I’d always wanted to fly one. I told him to just let me know when, and I’d be there. Since I’d gotten to know Mickey better I’d noticed that he was always filling people’s heads with delusions of grandeur and figured it was just talk however. The next day I dropped him off at O’Hare, and that was the last time my “brother for life” and I ever really talked.

Freddy and I still kept in pretty close contact, however. As far as his retirement went, that idea was very short lived. I met with him only a couple of weeks after the meeting when he gave me the Rolex, and he mentioned that Sam Beaumont had told him he was getting another Titan in trade soon. Freddy said he was thinking of buying it and doing a few quick loads out of Belize that spring. He gave me a broken high frequency transceiver and asked me if I could find someone to fix it. He said once installed in the Titan, it would give us the ability to communicate all the way down to Central America.
