Fourteen

It was one of the most beautiful days New Orleans had seen that summer. The weather was comfortably warm, not overbearing as it had been. There was a slight breeze that felt tropical, like we were on some island. The sky was populated with marshmallow clouds moving as fast as the crowd around us.

I stood next to Gabriel outside the church doors, taking in the beautiful weather and watching as he interacted with the musicians from the mass. His face was alight with energy I couldn’t understand. He seemed to love their attention. It was different than what he was used to, it was directed at his music. He was so at ease with them it was hard to tell they had just met. It was the first time I had ever seen him make direct eye contact with anyone so soon. Usually it seemed he had to build up to it.

Father Creaux was so impressed with his interest in St. Francis that when he found out he was a musician, he invited him back as the entertainment. Gabriel took him up on the offer with childlike enthusiasm and promised that as soon as his schedule would allow, he would. There was no doubt in my mind that he would make good on his offer, but I wondered if his schedule ever allowed for anything other than acting, press tours, movie premiers, award shows, and talk shows.

“Are you ready to head home?” Gabriel asked as he waved goodbye to the musicians.

Our homeward pace was as light as the day. We were in a tropical trance.

“What? No more plans that involve miles and miles of walking?” He laughed.

I shook my head. “No, I’m ready to have you all to myself. I am going to be selfish for once.”

“Finally. Hey, I was thinking about something you said yesterday, while we were under the oak tree.”

“What was that?”

“Those jars you were talking about. The ones your brother used to trap the fireflies. What kind were they?”

“Manez jars, why?”

He burst out laughing.

“What?”

“The way you say mayonnaise—‘man-ez’—I’ve never heard it pronounced in that particular way.” He continued to laugh at my accent, like he didn’t have one of his own.

“I am that funny? Why? Because I don’t sound like a newscaster and say mayo-naise?” I made sure to sound out the word correctly this time. I pursed my lips, pulled my hand from his, and stomped off.

“Oh, come on, love. Wait.”

I tried walking faster to lose him, but it was no use. He was in excellent physical condition and caught up with me in two long strides. I damned myself for giving up on the gym.

“Come on, love.” He grabbed my arm and forced me to stop. “I was just making a funny. You’re not really mad, are you?”

I waited to answer, looking everywhere else but where he stood directly in front of me. He started to squirm. Finally, when he seemed to be getting truly upset, I caved. “Gotcha!”

He laughed a little nervous laugh. “Whew.
