TRUE TO my word, I drove us in Luis’s truck to the next part of the date. The closer we got, the more I considered turning around. When it became clear there was no other option, unless he was planning on us driving down the canyon and doing something in Loveland, the sweat returned.

Fate was definitely involved with Luis and I. Fate, destiny, whatever. In that moment, pulling into the parking lot of Columbine Adventures, I was fairly certain the devil was more to blame than anything as sweet sounding as fate or destiny. More of the devil than Cupid, that was for sure. Talking about Luis’s dead husband at dinner and then ending up here.

Of all the places we could go in Estes, Luis had chosen one of Todd’s two businesses. I searched the parking lot for Todd’s car. I didn’t see it, but the place was packed, so I couldn’t be sure.

I was also surprised at Luis’s choice. It seemed more fun and carefree than I’d given him credit for. I nearly suggested we go across town to the huge rainbow slides if this was the type of thing he was in the mood for.

Putting the truck in park, I scanned the area, looking over the minigolf courses, go-kart tracks, and bumper boat pool. Not that it would do any good with so many people, but Todd’s styled silver hair was typically easy to spot.

“Are you okay? You look terrified.”

I glanced over at Luis and experienced a shot of guilt. The poor man had been through so much and was transparent with me about his loss. How could I wimp out over running into one of my best friends, who I just happened to have a crush on?

Twisting to fully face him, I decided to put it all out on the table. “Okay, it seems we’re having one of those first dates where people spill their guts. I’m not really sure if that’s a real thing or not, but it looks like that’s what we’re doing.”

“Okay….” Luis sounded confused and a bit concerned.

“Remember that guy I told you I was mooning over at dinner? Well, he’s also one of my best friends, and he owns this place.”

Luis looked over at the adult playground and then back to me. “Oh. Well, that’s interesting timing.”

“Yeah.”

“Well, hey, let’s do something else.” He shrugged. “I was just trying to think of something fun, even a bit touristy. We could go downtown and wander through the shops. There’s plenty of places to get dessert.”

Yes, please! “And plenty of places to get an I Love Estes T-shirt.”

“Exactly. Let’s do it.”

Shifting in the seat, I reached for the stick shift and paused. Feeling like a total ass and coward, I glanced back up at the golf course.

Well, shit.

I turned back to Luis. “You know what, never mind. Let’s stay here. It’s a fun place, you did a great job picking, and you were brave tonight. I can be too.” I wasn’t as sure of that as I sounded.
