If you’re in real danger, you need to take steps to stay safe. If you’re on the receiving end of domestic violence or abuse, for example, you need to get to safety. If you’ve a serious physical health problem, you need the right investigations and treatment for this.
I’m still not completely convinced
Maybe you’ve made progress, but still have nagging doubts about whether your disaster predictions are true. Don’t worry, this often happens! Remember the story about Hamish and the wall (see the sidebar ‘The builder’s apprentice’). By taking his hands off the wall Hamish may gain confidence that the wall wouldn’t fall down, but an even better test might be to push the wall. Doing so would show him once and for all whether it was solid. Are there any further experiments you can do to ‘push the wall’ by doing the opposite of your usual safety behaviours?
For example, after several successful restaurant meals, Donna decided to go to a restaurant with friends who didn’t know about her anxiety difficulties, to sit a long way from the toilets and have a full three-course meal. She wasn’t sick, and this fact really proved to her that her difficulties were in the past.
Well done! Tackling fears in this way can be scary but can really help to make you feel less anxious in the long run.
