Chapter 16

Hostile

B illie found herself tied up to a tree again. She had always been a believer in karma, but that theory was fleeting fast. She couldn’t imagine what she had done in her life to warrant the trauma of the past week. She was at a familiar place – a terrifying place – and she now was certain of what a true monster looked like. She couldn’t shake it, though… she had to get back to that cave to find out who was in there… and why. But first she had to figure out how to get free. Billie was still in her bathing suit, and her body was badly sunburnt. Her poor skin was peeling off from head to toe, but the new skin was getting burnt before the old skin was even gone. All this would have been too much to endure for most people, but Billie was not most people; she was a fighter, and a champion fighter at that.

She was more determined than ever to right some major wrongs. She had worked so hard for her whole life chasing a paper dream. She had worked day and night to earn a fortune, forgoing so many years of joy and bliss. Only now did she realize that she’d had a fortune long before she was rich… What she wouldn’t give to be living back in the Winnebago with Jack, eating beanie weenies. Money doesn’t buy real things. I can’t even get a shirt, she thought to herself. She sat there tied to the tree, just waiting for her chance. One thing life had taught her is that you will get your chance… but you have to know when to seize it.

“I give you a little freedom, a little trust, and this is what you do? You go snooping around my island, messing with my business?” he asked.

Billie didn’t respond; she just looked at him.

“But that’s not enough for you, is it? Greedy damn American… I shouldn’t have let you live this long!” He was getting angry, and fast.

“Carlos, please – I just didn’t want anyone to die!” pleaded Billie.

Carlos’ left eye was twitching nervously; Billie had seen it twice before – on the night when she cooked fish and that day on the rock.

“YOU TURN MY OWN SON AGAINST ME?” he screamed.

“NO, Carlos, I would never d…” she tried pleading with him again, but she was interrupted.

“SHUT UP! YOU’VE TALKED ENOUGH!” Carlos exploded. “You see… when I was a little boy, I took something that didn’t belong to me. When my father found out about it, he taught me that it was wrong to steal. He not only taught me, but he set the example, so that none of my younger brothers and sisters would make the same mistakes that I did. Every time I did something wrong from then on out, he would teach me a lesson. You see, I was a little more stubborn than most… and maybe a little dumber – I don’t know… but he finally got through to me.
