Ginger

“All you had to do was agree to marry me, Ging,” Trevor spat. She was trying to sit up and keep her eyes open, but it was getting to be impossible. He had knocked her out when she was standing in his kitchen, shouting at him for lying to her—again. He asked her if she wanted something to drink, in the middle of her tirade, and she foolishly agreed. Ginger was sure that the drink was laced with something that knocked her out, but the question remained—what was it?

“You drugged me,” she slurred, trying to stay awake. “What did you give me?” she asked.

“Don’t worry, I didn’t give you anything that would hurt the baby. I need the little guy if my plan is going to work. My grandfather thought he was being so clever, putting in the stipulation about me having to be married with a kid by thirty, to get any of his money. He’s probably rolling over in his grave right now at my good luck.”

“You only care about the money,” she slurred.

“That’s not true,” Trevor countered. “I care about my son,” he said.

“And if it’s a girl?” Ginger asked.

“It won’t be,” he insisted, “a father can tell these things.”

She couldn’t help her laugh. “You’re not a father,” she hissed. “You are some guy I had sex with, but you’ll never be my baby’s father. Once I go to the police and tell them that you kidnapped me and held me, hostage, they’ll never let you be my baby’s father.”

“We’ll just have to agree to disagree about that, honey. I’m going to be a father to this baby. You won’t be able to stop me or my team of lawyers. In fact, I’d be surprised if you’re granted custody of my son at all after I get done with you,” he said. “You’re just a vessel right now, but sooner or later, you won’t be necessary.”

“You’re forgetting the stipulation about marriage in your grandfather’s will,” she said. “I won’t marry you and you won’t ever get his money.”

“I’ve given that some thought,” he said. “I just have to be married. The will never said that I had to marry the mother of my child. You’re giving me the part that I thought would never happen—a baby by the time I’m thirty. I can find some other woman willing to marry me. Hell, I bet I could make a phone call right now and have a bride waiting for me at the justice of the peace in an hour—white dress and all.” Shit, he was right. There was no rule about him having to marry the mother of his child. He just had to be married and have a baby by thirty. If he kept her hidden away until she had the baby, he’d be able to take the baby and kill her. Was that his plan? She never thought that Trevor could be so conniving, but then again, she didn’t peg him as a kidnapper either.

“You can’t keep me locked up until the baby comes,” she insisted.
