Chapter 19

Maizy

I wake up in the bed alone, but I feel so good. Last night was by far the best night of my life. I have never felt so wanted and cared for. I’m not sure I understand this ol’ lady thing, but I am liking the perks.

Ty is all tough and kick ass on the outside, but he has a side that I just want to take in my arms and protect. I’d never tell him that. I think we actually have a lot in common. I stretch in this big comfortable bed.

My arm stings a little but mostly it is ok. I need a shower and then I need to go and see the rest of the club. Ty said he would be gone for a little while this morning for errands but hopefully it won’t take long. I don’t know anyone here, but that’s nothing new for me.

I hurry and take a shower and enjoy all the stuff Callie brought me. Name brand lotions and hair products. Things I could never afford on my own. I can never afford anything but the necessities and those sometimes are a stretch. I dress in the workout clothes Callie washed for me. They smell good. It’s a weird thought, but when you have to buy generic brands, they don’t always smell as good as others. Most of the time I am just happy to have clean clothes. Only someone who has had to live this way would understand the little things. Heck there has been times I washed my clothes out in a sink with hand soap or just rinsed them out with water. These people would never understand that. They don’t look like the rich ritzy type, but they haven’t struggled just to survive. I have to watch what I say around them. I wouldn’t want to embarrass Ty. I don’t want pity. I never have.

I brush out my hair and put it up in a messy bun with some of the hair ties Callie brought. Then I look at myself in the mirror. I don’t often look in the mirror. I don’t like what I see. I always feel like I have let Delbert down when I see my reflection. I promised him I would do better and I have tried, but every time I dig my way out, Blazer drags me back in.

Before Delbert died I was a day worker. There is this store on Broadway Street where you can go and wait for someone to come by with a job. I didn’t always work. Some days I had a bad feeling about the people who stopped and sometimes there was just no work.

I had to be careful. A young girl standing waiting for a job on the side of the road. I understood what it looked like, but most of the time I had no problems. I went for repeat work where I had worked before. I did have altercations every once in a while.
