Drew switched stances as he retreated from Nick, only to switch back and circle around. He threw a jab at the pad Nick held in front of him, followed by a solid cross before Nick circled back around, making him advance just to keep the pad within range. As they worked, Tony called out foot positions to them. Drew planned to make the transitions so smooth and second nature that he just performed them automatically, without thought, leaving his focus free to go where it counted. Footwork, much like breathing, needed to be effortless. Right now though, it wasn’t, and if Tony’s curses were any indication, he needed a lot of practice.

Of course his focus was shot today. Every time he let loose of his thoughts, they shot directly to the scene he’d had with Nina last night. The one where she’d shoved him away like a vegetarian would a steak. He got it, of course he did. She was frustrated that he couldn’t make up his mind. He got that she thought he’d decided for her. But that wasn’t it, not really. It just hadn’t occurred to him that she’d object to his new plan, not after the signals she’d been sending. Maybe it had—

Drew rocked back as Nick hit him upside the head with the pad.

“You aren’t focusing, man. Let whatever it is go and pay attention.”

Drew nodded in a sharp motion. “Sorry. I’m here now.”

Taking him at his word, Nick picked up the pace, bounding across the mats as Drew followed, using the patterns Tony called out. Then Tony altered the rhythm, and Drew retreated from Nick’s attack, waiting for the opportunity to strike his blows. By the time Tony called a break, they’d been at it for over two hours, Drew had shifted to autopilot, and his steps were beyond ragged.

Drew leaned against the wall, sucking in breaths. He nodded at Tony as he unwrapped his hands.

“Thanks man. What time tomorrow?

Tony laughed. “You haven’t had enough? I’ll be here around ten if you want to meet up then.” He saluted, and walked off, leaving Drew panting against the wall.

Nick slid down the wall to sit by Drew’s feet. His breath came as ragged as Drew’s—they had both pushed hard.

Nick peered up at Drew, his eyes narrowed. “Okay. What’s up, and don’t tell me nothing, because you were all kinds of distracted before Tony got impatient and started kicking both our asses.”

Drew finished unwrapping his right hand, and used it to run through his hair. He considered acting like he didn’t know what Nick was talking about, but Nick knew him well enough that he’d sniff out the lies. Besides, Nick knew women. Maybe he’d have some insight on how to handle his Nina problems.

Drew slid his back down the wall until he sat next to Nick. “It’s Nina.”

“Figured. What happened?”

“She’s been sending some pretty clear signals. But I didn’t want the distraction.”

“Well you’re distracted now. What happened?”

Drew ran through the chain of events with Nick, glancing over at him to gauge his reaction.
