* * *

Four years later, I ran into him at a film festival. I’d had some success in my career at that point, and I was leaving a dinner to go to the closing-night party. As I stepped out of the restaurant toward my limo (what a look!) I heard “Constance!”

It was him. He looked great. But so did I (thank God).

He came over and hugged me. He congratulated me on all my success. Said how he always knew I would make it, how talented I was. Told me how beautiful I looked.

I was cordial but cold. “Thank you, that’s so nice,” I said. But then I motioned to my waiting limo, indicating that I had to go.

“Wait, are you going to the festival party later?” he asked, excited.

Not anymore, I’m not, I thought. But I told him maybe.

I didn’t go to the party. He texted me all night. He was totally trying to fuck. I didn’t respond to any of his messages. Zero. Instead, I befriended one of the festival interns. She was a local, so she took me to some fun bars instead of the party. We got drunk together and I told her the whole story. She became protective on my behalf and started dissing him every time he texted me. It felt good to have a friend that night.

The next day, my new friend drove me to the airport for my flight back to LA. And, whaddaya know… Matt was at my gate. When he saw me, his face brightened. I frowned, turned my back and found a seat as far away from him as I could. He walked over to me, stood in front of me. After a long moment, he sighed and said, “You hate me, don’t you?”

I smiled a big, painful smile, cocked my head, and said, “Yeaaahhhh…” kind of shrugging as I did it.

He nodded, okay. And then he just stood there, seemed to be waiting for more.

After a moment, I asked, “How’s married life?”

“It’s… challenging,” he said, a smug grin on his face.

Ugh. What a dick. I was definitely feeling its size now.

We boarded the same plane. I was in first class; he was in economy. As he passed me to get to his seat in coach, he chuckled and said, “Of course.” And that was the end of our interaction.
