10 January 1916. Sunday

There have been no letters from Alyosha for almost two weeks and I’m simply going out of my mind, and tonight I had a terrible dream. I woke up all wet with tears. We were riding somewhere in a troika on a frosty night. And I felt him so close, his breathing, his lips. Such a strong desire suddenly gripped me to live fully, with all my being, I wanted to go on hearing the sounds of the bells and the runners’ pleasant creak forever. Then all that vanished and I was alone. And I was being taken somewhere, as in my childhood, my cheeks rubbed with goose fat—my whole face. Sticky and nasty. The grease warmed up and ran. In front of me were the horses’ croups and hoar-frosted tails. I saw them directly, smelled the bearskins I was sitting on, and the horse’s sweat and the gasses animals always pass. All of a sudden I awoke and sensed that he was dead.

My heart nearly burst.
