Do you remember anything in particular from the final incident? The one that took place on the corners of Basualdo and Tapalqué.

It’s really strange around there. No, that one went down the same as the others. The driver looked at the meter, turned around to charge me, and then I shot him and turned off the engine.

If you shot the drivers at the moment they turned around to charge you, when did you take the gun out?

When I got into the cab, I’d put the leather bag next to my thigh, and then I’d get it out during the trip. By the time we arrived at the destination I already had the gun in my hand.

Did you close your eyes then as well?

Yes. I think so. I’m not sure, actually.

If you had your eyes closed, how did you manage to hit your target on four different occasions?

I told you I had my eyes closed, but the truth is I have no memory of the moment I pulled the trigger. I can remember the sound of the gunshot inside the car, and then the guy slumped over. That’s all I have in my head.

From that occasion, I can remember that the diesel engine was making a horrible noise, and I switched it off because it was too loud. I saw a light go on outside a house a few meters away. I figured they must have seen me, and if they had a phone, they’d already be calling the police. All the same I stayed there for a while, smoking my cigarette. Nothing happened. Then I got out of the car and wandered through the streets until I found my way to Dos Hermanos.

I walked for a few blocks and then I went down a dead end. Spring was about to begin, so it wasn’t cold. There were people out on the sidewalks, even though it was late. I came out of the alley and then something incredible happened: a taxi came up from behind and pulled up in front of me. An armed man got out of the taxi and pointed his gun at me, telling me to stop. I went to get my pistol out of the purse but before I could, the other guy raised his weapon and fired at me. I recall perfectly—at this stage I no longer have the memory, but I know that at the time I could remember it—the click of the hammer on the revolver . . . and then, nothing. No shot, no bullet. I watched him freeze, staring at the revolver in confusion. Then I got my gun out and pointed it at him. The guy said “I’m not a cop” and I told him to get back in the car and leave. He threw the gun into the back seat, got in, and the taxi took off.

How far was this from the scene of the crime?

Four or five blocks. Everyone was looking at me. I had a military ID card, so I got it out and held it up: “Argentine Army, nothing to see here!” Everyone stayed calm.
