CHAPTER 23

His eyes caught mine, since I was in the middle of being a spectacle. I stumbled to my feet and pressed down on my white apron, wiping the butter off my hands. He didn’t speak. Instead his dog broke free from the grip of his hand, dragging his leash behind him, he pranced and jumped at Harry.

Blake came over and took both dogs off toward the back porch. Vivi scooped up the kids and got them into the kitchen. I stood frozen. Annie looked over at me and when her eyes met mine; she knew. It was Tarzan. Her caller was also her co-worker. Her fellow talk show host, Jack Bennett. And she never knew it because he had disguised his voice so well when he called into her show.

Annie looked at me deeply as she scooched her chair back from the table and made her way over to me.

I smiled weekly. Embarrassed. Every feeling, every emotion I had when I was a teenager came rushing back to every corner of my body. My hands were suddenly sweaty. My heart raced a mile a minute. I felt my face flush with heat. What do I say? What do I do?

Annie jumped in.

“Jack, this is my sister Rhonda.” She tried to act like she knew nothing, playing it cool and classy, but I knew she had figured it all out in the rush of seconds since Vivi opened the door and began a new chapter of my life in one heart-stopping second.

I awkwardly reached out to shake his hand, but he leaned over for a hug. We flubbed the introductions: I missed his hug and he missed my hand. A sideways hug ensued. I blew a stray curl of hair from my eyes; butter slid down from my temple and plopped on his pants as I tried again to smile at him. He was more gorgeous than a man ought to be. Still long and lanky but about six foot three. His hair was now a dark golden brown, like toasted toffee, his skin was tan like it had been that summer in Tannehill. And those sky-blue eyes were just as mesmerizing as they had been to my teenaged heart all those sticky summers ago.

Words wouldn’t form in my mouth. I felt dry and cotton-mouthed. I needed a drink—and water wouldn’t even begin to do the trick. I played the part. He didn’t know I knew either, so everyone just went with it.

“Nice to see you Jack. Come on in. Pardon the mess here –the dog decided he would like to be the guest of honor and made himself comfortable with my feast. Hope you don’t mind. I have more mashed potatoes in the kitchen. Have a seat and I’ll be right back.”

I smiled at him-- then at everyone else and made my way clumsily back to the kitchen. Annie followed me.

“Don’t tell me—but that’s Tarzan, isn’t it? I mean the way he looked at you and honey, I thought I was gonna have to help you pick your jaw up from the butter on the floor.
