Chapter Ten

Angel sleepwalked through the remainder of the day, and that night was full of vague nightmares and dark shapes that haunted the edge of his vision. However, the next morning he reported to the greenhouse for training and put all his worries aside as he worked at launching and defending from magical attacks. Angel might be a piece of shit, but he needed to find an escape path, and that meant learning as much magic as possible.

After finishing with Luschesce, Angel decided to grab a sandwich and retreat to his room. Aurora had shown up with GED materials, and while Angel had no illusions about going to the university, a GED would make life easier. Maybe. Angel would probably have to use a fake name to get away from the Luschesce family, but people who’d finished high school knew shit, and it was time for Angel to build a new life and a new self.

He should probably cut back on the swearing and try to get rid of his Baltimore accent too. Focusing on the distant future allowed Angel to ignore the more immediate problem: he could not think of one way to get free. All his plans to use Matt to escape were gone. Matt would never forgive him; Angel knew that in his bones.

That meant no joyride, no late-night escape from the house. No university, no apartment, no easy route to freedom. The assault meant that all the FBI would offer was another prison stay. Confidential informants might get forgiven for breaking a few little laws, but feds didn’t forgive felonies. All doors had closed when Angel had hurt Vin, and Luschesce didn’t understand his own son well enough to understand that. Before, Angel had some image of mob bosses as being brilliant at understanding and manipulating people, but maybe they were just as clueless about family as the average Joe Schmo.

He was working his way through a section on completely worthless graphs and naming the points on them when his door flew open. In a heartbeat, Angel was on his feet, and the thick GED book slid to the floor.

“How could you?” Matt stood there, fists clenched and nearly trembling in rage. The emotion battered at Angel.

Angel shrugged. “Orders.” He didn’t even try to defend his actions, because there was no defense. Angel had attacked a helpless man.

Matt’s trembling grew worse, and he stepped into the room. “You’re a monster.”

Angel didn’t argue the point.

“Well?”

Angel put his hand on the dresser and waited for whatever insults Matt wanted to throw at him.

“Aren’t you going to explain?”

“I can’t.” Either Matt understood why Angel did it, or he didn’t. Matt knew his family. He knew Angel worked for his father. If Angel fearing for his own life wasn’t a good enough excuse, then he didn’t have anything else to offer. He certainly couldn’t start talking about the fucking FBI and the three bodies Rima had shown him.

Matt took another step forward. “He can’t fight back. He doesn’t know how.”

Angel knew that too.
