In The Hollow of Smugglers’ Notch

Snot dripped from Andrew’s nose and over his lips. He clamped his mouth tight against the mucus because he couldn’t wipe it away—not with a climbing rope clenched tightly between his hands. Andrew leaned over the cliff’s edge and looked through his amber-tinted goggles at Terry, who was secured by a single ice axe and the rope. A damning sound echoed across the chilled Vermont air. The reverberation popped as if metal cables were being stretched to their limit. The ice began to crack. Andrew clamped down on the rope, holding the brake harder through his belay device. His forearms shook and ached from holding the rope taut. Tighter than needed, but he didn’t want to give the rope an inch.

Terry’s grip started to slip down his axe handle. The ice against which he’d planted his crampons gave way when he attempted to set his second axe. Andrew wished they were drinking beer by the firepit in Terry’s backyard. But no. They were a couple hundred feet high, climbing Smugglers’ Notch on a pitch called Ragnarök. It felt like the end of the world as he hung onto the lifeline that suspended Terry.
