CHAPTER TWELVE

DEVON’S PHONE RANG during dinner. He glanced at the screen and saw Paul was calling. “Excuse me.” He stood and walked toward the exit. When he stepped into the quiet evening air, he answered, “Hello?”

“I’m glad I’ve caught you. I’ve got some updates on the letter you gave me.”

“The person who left the letter has been arrested. He broke into Macyn’s house again, and we were there to catch him.”

“Him?” Paul asked. “No. You have the wrong person. The print came back belonging to Sam, Devon.”

“Sam? As in Samantha, my ex, Samantha?” Devon was bewildered she would be involved in something like this. They had broken up over a year ago. Why would she be in Macyn’s house or writing threatening letters? “That doesn’t make sense. Why would she be involved?”

“I don’t know, man. All I know is my wife said the print belonged to Samantha Martin, and she showed me her mug shot. It looks like the same person.”

“I had no idea she even had a record. Uh…okay…whew…I don’t know what to say.” He was flabbergasted. “Where are you? Do you have the results?”

“I’m at home. Do you want me to meet you at the office?”

“No. I’m out at dinner with Macyn right now. When we finish, we’ll swing by your place and pick up what you’ve got. Have you heard anything from the lab upstate? Have they been able to get any hits?”

“Their testing was able to tell us the DNA is male. If we can get samples, they can do comparisons. Maybe Sam and the guy who was arrested worked together?”

“Can you see if your wife can get a copy of his DNA? They do cheek swabs now when people are arrested, so it should be on file.”

“Shouldn’t be a problem, but I’ll let you know.”

“Thanks Paul. We’ll see you soon.”

“No problem.”

Back inside, Devon had the hostess go to their table with a message for Bobby to meet him in the lobby. He waited and listened to the Latin beat coming from the overhead speakers. He made a mental list of the things they would need to do. Eve would have to leave town again, especially now he knew she was pregnant. If the person who had been arrested wasn’t involved with the letter, then the threat to Macyn and her friends and family was still active. He wanted to do everything he could to ensure they were all safe.

“Hey man. Is everything okay?” Bobby asked, entering the lobby.

“No, it’s not. The man who broke into Mac’s house may not be the person who left the letter and who was responsible for Eve’s ordeal. I just got off the phone with Paul, and he said the print on the letter belongs to Sam, my ex-girlfriend, but the DNA belongs to a male. I’ve asked Paul to see if his wife can get a copy of the cheek swab results for comparison. If she can’t, I’ll have to see what I can do in order to get a sample.
