CHAPTER NINE

“I’VE FOUND SOMETHING,” Brett called out, his voice tinged with excitement.

Macyn turned away from the paper she’d been writing on, trying to decipher the calendar code. She set her pen on the table and crossed the room to where Brett was working his magic.

“What’ve you got?” Macyn asked, standing behind him while looking over his shoulder at the screen. He had his e-mail pulled up.

“Nothing major, but it’s an answer to a question we’ve been wondering about. Frederick has access to Sam’s account. Give me a few minutes, and I might be able to tell you where the message we received was sent from.” His fingers tapped against the keyboard.

Macyn, upon hearing Frederick had access to Samantha’s account, now believed without a doubt he was behind the e-mail from their wedding day. She stepped away—her thoughts returning to her parents’ deaths.

“Devon, do you want to get some fresh air?”

He looked up from his stack of papers and smiled. “Sure.”

Macyn offered her hand, which he grasped, and pulled him toward the door. She was failing with keeping her feelings at bay. As she led him outside, she fought the tears that threatened to spill from her eyes. Damn it. I promised I wouldn’t cry. I won’t cry. She chanted inside her head.

She stepped outside, and the cool night air slapped her in the face, sobering her. Dropping Devon’s hand as she turned, Macyn wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered against his solid chest.

“Why are you apologizing? You haven’t done anything?”

“I promised myself I wouldn’t cry.”

“Baby, it’s okay. You’re allowed to cry, grieve, or whatever it is you need to do to make you feel better. Crying isn’t going to hurt anything.”

“I know it isn’t going to hurt anything, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to stop once I start. I need to concentrate on Frederick—give you guys one hundred percent.”

Devon pushed her away and held her at arm’s length.

“Bobby and Brett know what you’ve gone through. They want you working with them on this. Those men aren’t going to think less of you if you cry for your parents.”

“But will they question my ability to do the job?”

“Perhaps, but I think they’d question more if you didn’t show any emotion whatsoever. I think you need to try to find a happy medium until you allow yourself to grieve.”

Staring at Devon, Macyn thought about what he’d said. She knew he was right, but she had no idea how to find middle ground on this. She was torn.

“Baby, why don’t you get some sleep? You haven’t slept the last couple of nights. Your body and mind need rest.”

He was right. She hadn’t slept and wasn’t thinking rationally.

“You’re right, but can you call it a night and sleep with me? I need to feel your arms around me. I need the comfort and security.”

“Go inside. I’ll wrap things up and be in there in a few minutes,” he assured her, kissing her head.

“I love you, Devon,” she whispered before pulling from his embrace and going inside.
