The Candidate

Fred Walker was glad that this was going to be the last stop on the campaign trail. The plane landed and the candidate was the first off. He was ushered through the terminal by a small phalanx of guards that were surrounding him. Into the waiting black limousine they piled and were whisked away to the downtown city auditorium.

Multiple police cars flanked the limo to escort it to the waiting venue. Supporters stood on the side of the road waving and holding up banners as the entourage passed by.

On the other end of the black leather seat his assistant Amelia Fox sat prim and proper. She had been with him through everything that had happen both good and bad. Across from them on the jump seats the body guards had taken their positions and were staring out the windows.

His memories travelled back in time to 12 years previously when he had given his first speech at this same auditorium. He had been running for the House of Representatives for the first time. It was an experience he knew that he would never forget for the rest of his life. The ovation had been almost too intoxicating on what had been a quite warm day and it seemed like it was only yesterday.

Coming to the front door the limo stopped and everyone piled out. Police cars were lined up along the side of the street to give some protection. Fred made his way through the crowd with his body guards following close behind. Because of shaking so many hands of the supporters it took several minutes to reach the podium that was set up.

Fred Walker entered the auditorium to a round of clapping. He looked sharp in his dark gray suit as he walked across the stage to the waiting podium. Waving to the crowd he smiled and then held his hand in place to indicate he was ready to give his speech.

“Thank you all. Thank you. Thank you so very much for that warm welcome today.” He looked confused a moment before continuing to speak, the image of a bullet formed in his mind. I’m hoping that all of you will come out to vote this Election Day. However, if you’re voting for the other guy…”

This brought a round of laughter from the audience. He looked up at the lighting and a flash of red appeared by the alcove. Oh, that’s where you’re at. He lifted his left hand up, palm out, he heard the gunshot which was aimed at his head. Willing it to deflect slightly it hit him in his left shoulder. Blood soaked into the fabric next to the hole as he fell down on one knee. Involuntarily, his right hand covered the wound, red appeared between his fingers and a pained grimace on his face.

Throughout the audience shouts, shrieks and gasps rang out in their shock. None of them could believe what they had just seen. Security guards ran up to the stage. A second shot was fired adding to the disturbance.
